Then why in the heck is the student body not going crazy over this team each and every time they play? I was at the game Sat. vs. WMU and I would guess there were not more that 100 students there. Is it that most of these kids grew up in the region and to them MAC BB doesn't rate? I realize we are in Big Ten country, but come on 100 students in a new arena. Something is terribly wrong.
There are a few reasons why the attendance sucks. First, it's women's basketball, and with that comes a stigma. I enjoy their games, but many people refuse to believe it is quality basketball. Second, it's not advertised well at all. Most students do not know there is a basketball game going on, or a hockey game, or anything else. Football is about the only event that is advertised halfways decent. Although, having football be such a huge American sport, where basketball isn't as popular in the US, also contributes to that.

I don't know, with the BG News, and what not, I think the student body knows when the games are.

As a current student I can tell you that not everyone reads the BG News all the time, including me.

I feel like motivation is the key factor here. I don't think you have to bribe the students with promotions and such, you just have to make the student section a fun place to be. The best way to do that is to have the students themselves build it up. Students who are already rocking the student section need to bring their friends or start recruiting other "regulars". If the student section is a fun place to be then people will be more likely to show up and/or be aware of the games.

The hockey arena doesn't have nearly the strong student section that it used to, but it's a bit more consistent and rowdy than basketball. We just need that type of consistency of energy in the Stroh.

And just an idea, if there was a GIANT banner or sign on the wall of the Stroh center facing Wooster that said "GAME TONIGHT at (blank time)" whenever there was a game day, you'd probably get more people to show up just based on awareness from people driving by. Maybe not particularly students, but still it will make people in BG more aware of games. They've got all that space to advertise games and they don't really use it?

When my wife (to be) and I were at Illinois State when she was working on her Masters they had a unique way of letting the student body know about an athletic event on campus. On the quad in from of the corner stone to Old Main they have a flag pole. Any time there is a home athletic event, no matter what sport, a Redbird flag flies. We could easily do that on campus. It would be a visible sign of events. We could add a message board with the details of what sport is home, time, and venue. It would require daily updating by the department but what will it hurt to try?

These are good ideas.

I still believe most of these students were brought up with the Big Ten shoved at them day and night. Thus they have solid loyalties in that direction when they arrive looking down on the MAC. I have had students tell me just how impress they become after seeing a few games here. Some saying they wish they had started sooner.

I believe there is a student group that has started to appear at games recently...Falcon Fanatics...they have been rather entertaining, with their different themes and signs for games. They have been growing in numbers each game. They have a banner that I believe says they are on Facebook.

Loved the "Tim Tebow is the only true Bronco" at the Western Michigan game.

This is a start. Hopefully they don't get discouraged.

Well, to encourage student attendance BG could try sending a "Voicemail" from Curt Miller to every students' email address.

After all, that's what Tricia Cullop did today!

I didn't listen to the message (I'd probably gag) but here's what the text of the e-mail says:

---

Voice Mail Preview:

Hello rocket nation this is Tricia Cullop your head women's basketball coach this Saturday your rockets will square office it's archrival bowling green in a bottle of Mac division leaders here in Savage arena week early went in the top 25 in home attendance but we need your help to show in national televise audience white savage arena such appear domain be bold and where your goal.

Give office sleeper noon thanks for all your support and go rockets.

If one enters the arena from behind the team benches, is the visiting teams's bench to the left or right?

It probably depends upon the arena. HA!

OK, that wasn't very funny. Assuming you are talking about Savage Arena... if you are behind the team benches, the visiting bench is on the left and the Toledo bench is on the right.

Actually, I just had a great surprise.
Channel 11 ran a sound bite from her and from Coach Miller.
I can't remember her ever saying anything about the opposing team, but she actually mentioned Alexis Rogers and added how Chrissy Stephan has improved. If she mentioned Slagle, I didn't catch it, having already fainted.

Bg got screwed in the last couple seconds of the game and before anybody says I'm wrong think about for a minute! Three good points, 1.a Toledo player slapped I believe it was specks Rogers hand and another grabbed slagles shirt!
2. Normally after a game officials don't stick around, yet I watched them huddled up and discussing something.
3. Brandi said something to the officials!
Tell me we didnt get screwed! Ok we may have missed a lot of shots but had we of gotten that foul shot maybe just maybe we could have tied it up! But no! The officials screwed it up big time!

The only thing that was screwed up was our play in the last minute or two, especially the final play. How you can not even get a shot off is beside me.

You Rockette fans complain about everything....officiating screwed us....The Blade had a BG story on the front page and a UT story buried inside....we should leave the MAC and join the Big East because it's a better conference.....why don't you just....

Oops. My mistake. It's only Dustin. Shocked that numbers 4 and 5 weren't about people just sitting around on their hands and the sign Nazi's.

Sorry Dusty. BG gave up a double digit lead. We'll use this as a teaching moment and start a new 13 game winning streak starting Wednesday night.
