Round 1
Re: Round 1
This loss doesn't bother me except that it came against our biggest rival. I think we needed a blemish in conference play. I really didn't want to head into the MAC tournament with that "monkey" on our back. Playing them on a neutral court with a chip on our shoulder should serve us well if we see them again. We won't have a double digit lead and lose to them again.

Re: Round 1
I completely agree. My bitterness about this is just because it's the THIRD loss in the rivalry by such a close margin. However, I readily admit the better team won. BG is just not deep, and doesn't benefit from the veteran leadership that UT has this year. Curt Miller admitted it himself - Courney's three was all because she's a senior stepping up and doing what seniors do. For BG, this is still a rebuilding year, and we don't have the kids who have been in that moment. Chrissy was the only starter from last year and Jessica probably never played more than 20 minutes a game.Rollo83 wrote:This loss doesn't bother me except that it came against our biggest rival. Honestly, I think the team will learn more from this heartbreaking loss as they would if they had won. Losses like this expose flaws, and the true champions are the ones who fix the mistakes and use that experience to win the MAC tournament. And, the fact that we went toe-to-toe with this great UT team is still a source of pride.
Blaming the refs for a loss is just stupid. The refs actually made decent, balanced calls IMHO. The better team played a better overall game. That is all.
Haha, no, that wasn't me! Too funny. There are a few of us BGSU alumni who wear orange and brown to class. I actually had a bet with my Legal Ethics professor about who would win this game. Going to be painful going to class Monday! And, yeah, BG is my FORMER school, but my former school took me to the Sweet 16 with BG when I was in the Falcon Athletic Band, and my loyalty and love for BGWBB will never sway after thath2oville rocket wrote:Hmmm, doesn't sound like you were cheering your school on. Sounds as if you were cheering your FORMER school on. Were you the guy in orange buying Rocket sweats in the Rocket Store before the game?ccollin13 wrote:I was cheering them on; I was sitting in that block of orange in the nosebleeds opposite the BG bench. I just moved after the game to do my hw. Trust me, I follow my Falcons. Plus, I get free entrance and free parking at UT as a student ;othat's true, though-there was a guy all decked out in BG stuff buying a little kid's Rocket sweatsuit. Maybe, he decided to send his son to UT?
I also found it odd that one of BG's trainers and a couple assistants were wearing blue shirts.

As we walked in, some ut fan (in a fun way) poked fun and said "Hey, isn't BG in Kentucky?" I responded with "Um, ins't Toledo in Spain?' He got a good laugh outta that. The only bad thing was the absolute ahole and his kid next to us in the stands that complained about EVERY single call against ut...I mean every single thing. I kept my mouth shut for the most part (Mrs. Freak would have been very proud of me LOL). But at the end, they started shooting BS our way. I simply responded, 41-28 all time series and 22 combined Regular season and Tourney MAC Titles. Eh, BG has their share of idiots as
GO FALCONS!
Actually depending on where I sit, I spend most of a UT women's game yelling at our fans. A lot of them do b*tch about every single call/no call. It really has a negative effect on the people around. Plus, its annoying. Yeah they're Nice people but many of them really have little clue about the game of basketball.

Back atcha! Props to your fans who fill the stands better than we do at home. Nice to see so many students show up.Rocket_Fanatic wrote:Yes you lost but you guys simply reload every year... I just hope we can finally beat you when it matters most in March!
Props to your fans...you travel better than we do
We will outnumber you in Cleveland, I suspect. Hopefully the our numbers on the score board will outnumber yours, too. :p

Also, Toledo has one heck of a nice place to play ball; still can't get used to our place - leaves a LOT to be desired. But they say now they realize they made some mistakes and will start applying band-aids.
No shame for anyone today- great effort by both teams and an exciting performance. BG stopped hitting the threes and we started hitting the frees and that seemed to be the difference. BG seems to be desperately short on the bench-the two BG players who played the most minutes (I think it was number 14 and maybe number 1 who played 40 and 38 respectively) combined to shoot 2 for 20 and the Falcons only got two points from their bench. I'm really surprised there isn't more depth there.
The lack of depth you refer to is primarily related to the fact that BG lost SIX players to graduation last year, replaced for the most part, by true freshmen....one is starting, a couple more are getting some minutes, admittedly not a lot. Crazy thing is that what looked to be their BEST outside shooters in this frosh group tore an ACL and hasn't played a second this year. (She beat the guys entries in the 3pt shooting competition at the "midnite madness" event).... I know it's posted somewhere, but the total number of points, rebounds etc. lost to graduation would stagger most programs... yet Curt finds a way to win a significant number of games with an entire "new" group of players.
Generally, this team does NOT shoot nearly as well as last year's group, but they DO play better overall defense, IMO. I thought they'd be at least a year away from effectively competing...shows what I know.

In an earlier post, I mentioned that he was a heck of a coach to take the losses he had last year and have the year he's having this year. I believe he SHOULD be a serious contender for National Coach of the Year if he wins out and makes the NCAAs. He won't be but he should be.Class of 61 wrote:H20,h2oville rocket wrote:zete wrote:Rocket_Fanatic, your team deserved to win. Re: Round 1
Part of the success is the scheduling. Coach did a good job of a soft schedule, got a real plus in Lex, and the recruting class isn't bad. 'Nique is going to be a beast if she improves even a little between 1st and 2nd year, and I didn't see Keila, but I can't wait to.
Logan may make us forget about Pontius, remember Tracy wasn't the greatest PG in her first year, so, yeah, did I mention that I am looking forward to next year? I don't expect the Falcons to go deep into the NCAA's, or even get there, but if they do, it's a bonus, making the tourney in a rebuilding year. That ought to be worth COY if we make it, and if we don't, well the WNIT will extend our season.

Love the fact Logan Pastor is getting quality min...she tore it up at Green HS and was an assist warrior. She would always look to dish to the open player first...and then thought about shooting. She is gonna be a very good one...

Re: Round 1
UT has some women that can be a challenge to handle physically...their bigs play a much tougher brand of basketball than their male counterparts at UT which I think is hilarious...anyhow. I thought Papenfuss did a decent job of answering that challenge for us on Saturday. If Stein and Ogle can develop a bit more heading into next year we are going to have a very difficult mix to deal with in the the frontcourt.
But..who cares about next year. Let's close this out and go to Cleveland as a top seed!!!

Re: Round 1
I remember pulling into the garage while the women were playing and Kate Achter was the guest on WBGU at halftime. Talking about Tracy, she said "just give her a little bit of time and you're going to forget about ol what's-her-name-number-20-who-used-to-be-the-point-guard". About three or four games later, Tracy had something click and that little girl from Clay High School was but a memory.HoopsFan wrote: Logan may make us forget about Pontius, remember Tracy wasn't the greatest PG in her first year, so, yeah, did I mention that I am looking forward to next year?
Just for you Denny!!!!
From the game notes -
BGSU head coach Curt Miller and his staff are performing one of their top coaching jobs in their decade-plus at BGSU, having orchestrated this season's success with a very youthful squad ... nine players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores ... the Falcons lost six players, including four starters, from a year ago ... that group of graduates combined for nearly 5,500 points, 2,400 rebounds and 1,000 assists in their BGSU careers.

More than 6000 points
More than 2500 rebounds
More than 1000 assists
**I believe the difference between the totals are if you count all of Maggie Hennegan's career numbers, or only those from her time at BG.

Re: Round 1
Any time anyone mentions the freshman class, I have to push Jasmine's name out there again. She already has so much of what I admire in Jessica Slagle - her speed, her agility, and her ability to usually be right where the team needs her, stop on a dime and make change. And then there's that 3 point throw from the corner ...HoopsFan wrote:Part of the success is the scheduling.
