Kate just finished her second year as HC at Loyola. While I loved watching her play here while I was in school, not sure bringing in someone with a 9-50 career coaching record is the best idea for the program, even if they are an alum and one of the best players in program history

I agree with this thought process, especially after Louis Orr. I do just find it interesting that the coaches at the two schools from the MAC that will make the women's tournaments are both coaches like that

gmartin wrote:On a side note, Ashland is 31-0 this year. I'm not sure if it was an exhibition or regular season game that did not count against their win-loss, but they played at Ohio State and put up 80 points. They also played #1 UConn and scored 60 points. That's some pretty tough competition. Makes me like that coach even more.

And in their 31 wins, they have scored over 100 points 18 times. 4 times over 120 pts!!! They average 104.5ppg. Give up 63ppg. That's a difference of 42 points ppg.
Wow, you convinced me with those numbers. That's incredible.

That said, I know better than to put all eggs in one basket. I'm looking forward to seeing Moose get a new hire in, and I'm encouraged that he acted on something that so obviously needed to be done.

And now it is easy to hate on Roos but let's be bigger than that. While things did not go the way any of us, her included, would have wanted she was a large part of some very successful women's basketball here at BGSU. We should keep that in mind. 17 years is a long time and she was very involved in the community. I hope her next stop is a successful one. I also think we should thank her for being a loyal Falcon and wish her well in a positive way.

We ARE better than this.
Thank you Coach Roos for all you have done for the program. This program is better because of you. I wish you well!

I expect GMartin and Elmer Fudd to apply for the job. They obviously know so much that they would be a sure thing for BG.

As far as Kate Achter's record at Loyola, she walked into a very poor situation and basically started with an expansion team.

I just hope that we do not lose current players or our recruiting class. We lost basically two years of recruiting classes that we were working on when Coach Miller left.

It's a given we're going to lose recruits. Probably even have a transfer too. That's the nature of coaching changes.

WOO HOO

Just heard it on WSPD

Lets hope there is little fallout from the coaching change. It’s not likely-it was a pretty unhappy bunch at the end.

As much as I agree with the decision, I'm afraid some bridges have been burned (at least temporarily). Several WBB alum have expressed disappointment on social media and Curt Miller has liked all of those tweets. Anyone who played under Coach Roos loved and respected her. Unfortunately, it just didn't result in wins or any type of improvement on the court over the last three seasons.

You guys can take Cullop and we’ll get the coach from Ashland. Cullop is great but in almost 10 years we’ve only had an WNIT title and 1 tourney appearance. Not that impressive when you have great facilities and average 3500 a night

Okay, now that I'm sitting at my workstation and not on my phone....\

We have a couple of examples. Chris Jans, took 7 years of suck and got amazing results from Louis Orr's team. Roos took Miller's team to the championship. Granted, Jans was going to suffer had he stayed unless he could find about 4 players that wanted to put up with him.

Roos was a great assistant, an asset to the community, and an excellent interview. She was not a good lemonade maker. However, she also recruited the lemons, so it was her coaching style that did her in. The glaring flaw is the point guard play. Geeze, she recruited a point guard that plays the same as the existing one. Must be something flawed in the approach. I see talent there, but standing around and passing the ball into the lane only works if the lane player can make layups and the guards can make the shots. We were sorely lacking in both.

I didn't go to practice, but it has to be demoralizing to be on the team and only get 70 or 80 minutes a SEASON when the team is losing, note Baer, Cole, Myers, et al. If your offense can't shoot 3's, and you didn't recruit a 3-point shooter, well, it's not rocket science. Try a different offense.

Anyway, I'm not going to pull a Dan Cummins and bash the fired coach like he did to Dakich II. You get to keep coaching when you win. Best of luck to Roos, maybe an assistant's job is in her future.

And you won the WNIT title that year because you bought 3 straight home games (Quarters, Semis and Finals). Do you think you would have won the WNIT if you played on the road? You can keep Cullop. I trust Moose will hire the right person and I hope he looks at this Ashland Coach. 99-2. Scored 60 against UConn and 80 against Ohio State. 104 ppg this year. 2017 National Champs.

I want to thank Hockey John for the vote of confidence in my prospective coaching abilities, and I'm certain there was no sarcasm integrated into that remark. Of all my comments concerning the issues with the coaching, or lack thereof, I have never disputed the fact of Coach Roos being a great person, as I have personally spoken with her a couple of times. I wish her all the best, in spite of the fact that I strongly agree with the decision to let her go.
As I've said before, my comments were based on my observations as a spectator and a fan, and my years of playing and watching basketball. I can take the negative comments on my posts, but I call them as I see them. Everyone on this blog is not obligated to agree with my opinions, but I've gotten a lot of fellow bloggers who are seeing what I see. Coach Roos, I wish you all the best in the future! Now let's get on with trying to put the BGSU Women's Basketball program back on the winning track! GO FALCONS!!!

Not a big fan of trying the Curt Miller tree again..... Like the idea of hiring a proven HC from a lower division instead of an assistant from a D1 school

gmartin wrote:Looks like her salary at Ashland is close to $150,000. Maybe BG could offer her $200,000 plus bonuses. If she's the right fit that may be enough to lure her to BG. Looks like her husband still may be an assistant coach with the Ashland men's team. So maybe she isn't looking for a new job. Rumors are Kent State with looking at her last year and if Akron fires their head coach they may be looking at her this year as well.
Her husband is an assistant coach on the women's team.

Sure playing at home helped tremendously but we had to beat Syracuse, Alabama, Auburn and USC among others to win it. That counts for something...

Absolutely without question those were impressive wins. I just don't care for the wnit because if you have a decent record and you have the money you can buy your way to playing to the finals all at home. Just like last year all the Mac schools played on Big 10 opponents floors.
