Some Coach Miller comments...........

"We build our program to win MAC championships and not national championships," Miller said. "You can get away with undersized post players in our league and they've been very successful. We think our style can go and play out of our conference."

Does anybody have wierd feeling about those comments? Just wondering , cuz I feel somewhat dismayed by them. I known and am sure that Coach Miller knows he does't have the athletes to compete for national championships at this point in time, but to discount the idea of building a program that could aspire to a national championship seems utterly and completely defeatest to me. What if G. Mason had that attitude? Would they be knocking on the proverbial door of the national championship today?

Now I know that mens and women's basketball has their differences with talent gaps but it seems rather terribly defeatest to say that we will never ever try to even get to a level where knocking on that "door" would be possible. Thats just my thoughts.

The whole story from the toledo blade is here.

I don't see that at all in the quote. Maybe there was something more in the article that made it feel that way to you, but just from the quote, I'm not getting that. What I see in that quote is Coach Miller saying "Yeah, we didn't advance in the NCAAs, but at the moment, what we're doing is building a team and strategy that can consistently finish at the top of the MAC." I don't see anything about a "never ever try to possibly..."

Looking to deeply into the comments FB, and not really what they mean. The program should be built to win MAC championships, because we are in the MAC. Everything will flow from that. It doesn't mean that he won't get his teams ready to win in the OOC schedule. I think it goes back to his philosphy of starting from the locker room. He isn't going to try to go out and recruit the biggest players just to have them. If the best players for him are smaller than that is what he will use to win MAC championships. For him to try to build a Nat Champion at BG would take many years given the current landscape of women's hoops. But to be a dynasty in the MAC, and win 1 or 2 games in the tournament with the players he is recruiting is very possible in the next 1 to 2 years.

You have to stand up to be able to walk.

You walk before you run.

You have to win the MAC to be able to go to the tournament.

It all starts slow.

Very well said "transfer"=D>. It wasn't so long ago that our program was not where it should be in the MAC. Look at how much has been done in so little of a time span. Let Curt and his staff keep doing what they're doing and BGSU's name recognition will continue to grow. Back to back MAC champions, winningnest team in MAC basketball history, you don't do that with a "defeatist attitude". One step at a time-one challenge at a time. ;-)

Hey I totally get the baby steps thing and what not. Yeah great teams arn't built over night, I know that, it just seemed to me that Curt Miller was not entertaining the idea of becoming hopefully maybe becoming the next Utah sometime in the future, a so called mid-major confernence team from the mountian west that had a #5 seed in this tourney , and they just got beat closely a couple days ago.

I guess maybe what Curt Miller is doing is not even bothering with the kind of tall girls that EMU and Miami might be getting cuz they don't have the athletism he wants , which does make some sense. But on the other hand it at times seems as though Miller doesn't like tall girls , which probably isn't true. But after a while you can only be only so good going the Villanova route. Ther'e lack of size came up real big vs Florida.

We might have the right mix of talent needed right now to dominate the Mac for years to come, but lets say we do that , that gets to be a litte boring and non-fufilling don't ya think? So after we might win say a bunch of championships, but we continuelly lose in the first round NCAA's. Or would we as fans be content with that , to not do any better but just win Mac Championships which are great? I know this a bunch of what-ifs and I'm probably getting way too ahead of myself seeing as we do have a way to go still to build the program , but I can't help but think about it a little anyway.

The way I see it, if we keep our team at the top of the MAC, continue winning and getting automatic bids to the NCAAs, we will build confidence, talent, strategy and interest in our team. Also, I don't see how continued in the MAC could be boring or unfulfilling. The only way I could see that happening is if all the rest of the talent in the MAC falls off and it's a total cakewalk every year with no challenges... and I don't really see that happening either.
All I can really say is this: I trust Coach Miller and his staff. I think we've seen in the past two seasons that they know what they're doing, and they'd be crazy to not have some sort of desire to take the team to the next level in the coming years. Give them time and all will become clear.

I guess all this recent success of 2 straight Mac championships and 2 straight NCAA berths has a me a little greedy and impatient on getting to that next level.

That could very well be, FB, and I think to a certain degree, we are all guilty of that. Especially in the MAC I think we all feel too much pressure for our teams to succeed right away because of the kind of coaching turnarounds that we are subject to. With Coach Miller, though, I really think we don't have to worry about that.

I think the paranoia is, to a certain degree, understandable. Just give it a couple of years (if not this next one!)...

I think the reaction to this year's football team helped show what happens when you expect too much. We love to be considered in the same breath with the "big" teams but at the same we have to realize the #1 goal of every program should be to win the conference. After you got that clinched every year the next step should be post season play/success.

When you are 5'5", the only thing tall girls are good for is slow dancing.
