Umm........guys, I fail to see how this has anything to do with me. She has a bone to pick with certain media outlets not some random AZZ poster. I have no problems with the term lady falcons , wow some people are really, really touchy.

Except that they actually win games, titles, have made the NCAA tourney, look better in skirts, beat Toledo, don't transfer, and generally don't hold up drive-through convenience stores on the north side.

It has to do with you because your signature has "BG Lady Falcons Mac Champs '05-'06-'07" in it. You are one of the many people she is talking about. Think about it.

Well it is the womens team, not the mens team. Since they are the only Falcon team in action now, I don't see a problem cutting the "ladies" title. But during the season, I think it is entirely fine and right to tack on Ladies, Womens, Not Mens, or whatever. I get the point about mentally subordinating womens sports by no adding "mens" to every male sport. But I think it is big deal about nothing important.

Some people get so upset over nothing. Lady Falcons sounds a lot better than many other terms used for women. all of this politically correct b.s. has gone too far. Go Lady Falcons!!

As a "LADY". I hate the term LAdy Falcons. They are the BGSU FALCONS.
I about gagged on the Cow Girl thing. I hate the LADY anything. THey represent BGSU and we are the Falcons.
The term is WAY old fashioned. It is not a PC thing, IMHO, but a respect thing. Being a LADY has historically been a prim and proper thing and that
does not describe these warriors at all.

On the thread at hand: I've never cared for "Lady (insert team name here)." It feels a tiny bit dated -- the equivalent term for men would probably be "Gentlemen," and whoever heard of applying that word to a sports team?
It isn't a big deal, and I'm not picking a fight with those who do use the word "lady," but "Lady Falcons" has never rang quite true with me, and I agree with BGSU's apparent decision to keep this construction out of its style guide.
"Falcons" gets it done. We're all Falcons here, after all.
If there is a need to deal with gender, the way I've always tended to handle it in posts is "Falcon women" or "Falcon men."
I may be accused of political correctness for this post, and that's fine.
But for those considering a flame: You might first drop an e-mail to Curt Miller or Ali Mann or whoever and ask them if they have a preference.
For as many millions as this perpetual right wing screech about "political correctness" has earned Clear Channel, a lot of this is just about respect.
If we respect our women, we'll call the team by the name the women prefer. It may not be a big deal to them either, but if they have a preference, why not honor it?
I think Maureen has delivered an answer on what they prefer. Perhaps it's also in the media guide.

This is stupid....
the use of the term "Lady" whatever college mascot we're talking about came about from those long ago times when women's intercollegiate sports were a novelty. The Universities and the media dolts that covered them felt they needed some method of distinguishing the men's teams and the women's teams so the term "Lady" was bolted onto the women's teams since the women were the "aberration."' Loking back, the veruy idea seems a tad condescending.
I don't think saying "Ali Mann lead the Falcons to a victory over Arizona State" needs to be rewritten as "Ali...the Lady Falcons..." or "Ali...the Falcon women...." I'm a Falcon, she's a Falcon, wouldn't you like to be a Falcon too . Just call them the Falcons
In the wild, is there even a distinct name for female Falcons?
Anyway, I suppose in those rare instances where there are when teams of both genders (sorry to all you transgender types) competing against an opponenet from identical schools, you could use women and men to distinguish them as a means of avoiding confusion, but the idea that we have to stick some kind of gender modifier onto the teams at all times is silly..
