There's nothing to comprehend. Hundreds of other schools use the same "Lady" insert random mascot name here. You'll hear or read about the Lady Vols or the Lady Huskies or Lady Cougars or whatever , everyone does it , so quit being so asinine. Its just PC nonsense plain and simple IMHO.

Hey if its good enough for the #1 team in the nation it certainly isn't beneath our women's basketball team to be nicknamed the Lady Falcons. Its simply to distinguish what gender of basketball we're talking about nothing more nothing less. Some people just need to get over themselves, really.

I believe it's asinine to call a team something it continuously says it does not want to be called.

Whether you think we should be called that is irrelevant. The fact is, it is NOT the name of our team. AND, a Falcon, by definition, is female. So if you are taking it upon yourself to change our monikers, start calling the men's team the "Gentleman Falcons." A "male falcon" is known as a Tiercel. Neither rolls off the tongue does it? So saying Lady Falcons makes you an employee of the Department of Redundancy Department.

And while we're at it; a Volunteer, in the context Tennessee uses it, is a man, (some type of soldier) making the "Lady" preface necessary for Tennessee. So how about just sticking to the nicknames we've used since the 1920s.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The team has asked over and over to not be referred to as the "Lady Falcons."

We are all Falcons.

This has, incidentally, nothing to do with political correctness. It's just about getting it right.

Those who call 'em the "Lady Falcons" might as well call them the "Falcon Wahine." "Falcon Wahine" would be equally incorrect.

I don't think that making too big deal about this is warranted. Yeah it's a bit ignorant, but this is just a fan board and I have no doubt Falconboy means well. Heck we don't have enough fans to start jumping on those we do have too much over minor sins. Now if that phrase was used in say a newspaper article, that would of course be a much different story.

Nevertheless using the Tennessee example as a defense is quite flawed.

Tennessee will always be referred to as Lady Vols because they do choose to use that name as their formal nickname. Bowling Green does not and you'll find no formal reference to "Lady Falcons" anywhere.

Using "lady" in the team name of women's athletic programs is a very southern thing. If you browse the list of D1 team names, with only a very few exceptions, the teams that use "lady" are in the South. I'm not sure that that says really...

Look at it this way FB, if nothing else I'd say the BG womens' basketball program has earned the right to be called whatever they darn well please. If they decide they want to be called the Pickled Pack of Peppers, I for one will call them the Pickled Pack of Peppers... probably.

You know that for a fact? I sure haven't heard that. I'm pretty sure I've heard the radio announcers refer to them the same way if I'm not mistaken. If it truly bothers them, I guess I could not use "Lady" then since it must be an ugly or bad word now. I've only used it to instantly identify which basketball team that I'm referring to especially if I'm posting in forum other than the Women's Basketball forum. Its short and sweet and instantly lets people know that I"m not talking about the men's team. But fine, I'll try to use just "falcon women" or some other distinguisher that I can come up with. Hmm.....lets see , the "the really attractive basketball team", uh....what else.

Maureen Fulton had a blog entry on it during the Sweet 16 run last spring.

Well if this is all true, then last year is the first I've heard about us not having Lady Falcons as our official nickname. I started using it way back whenever for a few main reasons, 1. cuz it sounded logical at the time,2. I'm sure I've heard the team referred to in that manner elsewhere (radio announcers) or in other places. Maybe others are doing it wrong too. Since that moniker is sorta hotwired into my keyboard finger memory it'll be tough to remember to not use it , but I'll give it a go.
