Kate Achter: All American?
http://bgsufalcons.cstv.com/sports/w-ba ... 08aae.html
what a tremendous honor to be considered one of the top 40 players in the nation by those who know best....the coaches. Heck, it was a big deal for her to get top 52 in the region. She's now assured Honorable Mention All American at the very least and, at least the last I heard, as an honorable mention All American (or more!!), this gets her an automatic invite to the WNBA pre-draft camp (if she chooses to go).....which is huge because now she'll get to perform in front of ALL WNBA coaches and GM's.

I saw that this morning when I went on the WBCA website. I also saw that Coach Miller and Coach Roos are both speaking at the Assistant Coaches conference during the final four. I really can't wait for the final four to come around. It costs a lot of money, but it is worth it. Kate's name is actually the first name on the list of 40. To see her name with all of those other great players that are in the women's game, it was really awesome to see.

I think the University should have titled the story "Achter tops list of All-American finalists"... and let the rest of us figure out that it's alphabetical.HoustonFalcon wrote:Kate's name is actually the first name on the list of 40.
But a well-deserved honor. Congrats Kate!
All-Americans of any kind don't come around BG too often, it's awesome that she's getting the recognition.

I can't help but wonder......given that she is the first ever finalist from BG for National All America (Ali was a Regional finalist but not National).....would that possibly warrent her jersey number being retired?
I was really surprised to see Bianca wearing Carin's #14 this season to be honest but I firmly believe that nobody should ever wear #20 again.

Lets let some time pass before we start speculating about retiring jersey numbers. But I do think Kate is deserving if we did indeed do it.bgwomenbbfan wrote:I can't help but wonder......given that she is the first ever finalist from BG for National All America (Ali was a Regional finalist but not National).....would that possibly warrent her jersey number being retired?

how much time do you propose? Her accomplishments aren't going to change between now and whenever and her impact on the University as well as the Women's basketball program won't change either. I was just tossing the thought out there but truthfully, if it's ever going to happen, they (the athletic department) already know it. Time won't change their thinking.Falconboy wrote:Lets let some time pass before we start speculating about retiring jersey numbers. Freshman Year: 1st Team MAC All Freshman and MAC Tournament MVP
Soph. Year : 2nd Team All-MAC and MAC All Tournament Team
Jr. Year : 2nd Team All MAC and MAC All Tournament Team
Sr. Year: MAC Player of the Year and Finalist for National All American Team
Career: 1st in BG History for Assists, FT's attempted, FT's made, 8th (maybe 7th?) all time scoring, 4th MAC all time assists, 4th MAC all time FT's attempted, 4th MAC all time FT's made.
That resume is more than enough to make a decision....and I'm not even mentioning her numerous MAC POW awards through her career as well as various other accomplishments.

Just a question here but how many jerseys if ever have we retired for BG women's basketball? I would say if its a very low number of jersey's that we've retired I'd say yeah go ahead and do it but if we've done it a lot then maybe it isn't prudent. Just sayin. I don't want this to sound like I'm totally against Kate Achter's number being considered for retirement or that she isn't possibly worthy of that honor , I'm just saying lets take real good gander at our women's basketball history and make a sound judgment. Not saying this to be 10 years from now but we shouldn't act like there some deadline for it either.

Also played in and won, 3 M.A.C. championship games. Also played in five NCAA tournament games and won two. She could very well be the best player BG has EVER had in women's hoops. She is certainly the most accomplished.
Yeah right girl!
Oorah!

Congratulations to Kate. Very well deserved. Thank you for four great years.
Kate's numbers are very impressive. The retiring of numbers is even a step above being in the BG Hall of Fame. There are 200 + athletes and coaches in the BG Hall of Fame. If all of these players numbers were retired you would be very limited in what numbers could be worn.
Think about all of the great BG football players. I think Paul Miles is the only football player to have his number retired. I am not sure about the Women's hoops team. Is Jackie Motycka's number retired?
The retiring of numbers shoud not be and hasn't been done very often.
I think with Kate's accomplishments, she could very well be in line for that honor.

Actually, I totally understand where you are coming from. I was just playing Devils advocate. I don't think there are any retired jersey's for Women's B-Ball and my point would be...if there was ever a first time to retire a jersey number, it seems that Kate is an absolute no brainer to be that first player. Not that there is a deadline...it just seems so incredibly obvious that there is no NEED for any sort of waiting period. I'm not talking do it at the banquet......but maybe some kind of ceremony next season or the season after would not be out of line if it were to happen at all.Falconboy wrote:Just a question here but how many jerseys if ever have we retired for BG women's basketball? I agree too. If we have no other BG women's player number retired then I'm all for Kate being our 1st. I was just saying it can get real easy to slip into a retire-every-great-BG-player's jersy mode if your not too careful. Could we not also make a case for Ali Mann or Liz Honneger? I'm not sure on this but has Kate surpassed all her previous teammates in scoring? I know she passed Liz but didn't know if she had passed Ali.bgwomenbbfan wrote:Actually, I totally understand where you are coming from. I was just playing Devils advocate. Who stole falconboy's login information? He's making way too much sense in this thread.
Kate's done great things, and she's probably an easy top ten all-time, but as has been said, to go out and retire her number would slight some wonderful accomplishments by some outstanding players (four or five of which she shared the floor with for three years).
I would like to see (and there seem to be hints that this may be coming) more recognition at the various venues of the BG HOFers. Put up a display with their numbers, but not necessarily retire the number from use.
