This is good news to hear.

The bad news is that our RPI and SOS both continued to tumble this week, thanks to us playing two horrible teams in Buffalo and EMU. We're currently 66th in RPI and 267th in SOS.

The good news is that outside of one remaining game at Buffalo, we don't play another 200+ RPI team the rest of the season. So our RPI and SOS numbers should improve from here on out. If we keep winning, we'll be cracking the rankings by middle to late February, IMO.

IIRC, we were not even ranked after we ran to the Sweet Sixteen. I'm not getting my hopes up about rankings, they don't really matter anyways. I love seeing the votes, and I love when our name is all over the polls if we ever get ranked, but unless we win the M.A.C. Championship we won't go dancing anyways. I am however fully confident we will win the tournament again this year.

I think we weren't ranked in 2007-08 because we only had 1 starter return from the sweet 16 team in 2006-07. We were ranked virtually the whole year in 2006-07, peaking at #16.

Regrettably, you are correct about not going to NC's without the automatic berth. Our SOS is so bad that nobody's going to respect our record. It's a shame because it really makes the regular season almost meaningless in the big scheme of things. Some team could catch fire for one weekend in Cleveland after sucking all year and steal the MAC's automatic bid. I don't think that will happen, but its possible.

It's shocking to me that this team has not earned the respect of an automatic bid after winning the MAC for 4 straight years. It sucks that our competition in the MAC is so weak that we're a 1 bid league, on both sides...men and women...ROLL ALONG FALCONS!!!

Past regular season and tourney performance is not considered during the selection process.

Are you sure?

On the men's side I will have to disagree with that statement.

Actually, out of 31 conferences, the MAC is ranked #11 in the RPI. I'd hardly call having 20 leagues below the MAC weak competition.

Take the time to look it up before you make a statement as if it's fact. The SWAC is ranked #31. Now that's what I call "so weak."

The MAC isn't a one-bid league because the competition is bad, it's a one bid league because Division I athletics is a good 'ol boys (and girls) system where the rich get richer, and everyone else gets bent over regardless of how good they are.

Yep. Disagree with it all you want. :)

Thinking about this a little bit this morning. There are 341 Division 1 teams I believe. Compared to the 119 in College Football. That means our 31 ranking right now is comparable to being ranked #11 in the football polls at the midpoint of the season. While I would love to see us ranked in the mid teens ( and believe we maybe if we just keep winning) the reality is that we really are getting more respect that we might originally realize. Just a though and some perspective.

At least for "mid majors".

Yup - we can't account for personal biases in the minds of the committee members. I actually think the Committees for both men's and women's have been relatively fair to the mid-major community over the last 5-10 years (2002 BG men's team notwithstanding, of course).

That's a really good point. Sometimes we forget that ranking just 25 teams isn't quite the same when you compare football and basketball. In the scope of all 341 teams, BGSU has really become a nationally recognized power, regardless of whether a number comes up next to their name or not.

I hear ya, man. Every year the mid majors have to prove themselves all over again. It sux but it is what it is.

Just keep winning...
