Other people got OVI's in BG, too. Why are there no online updates about them? Sure she is a student athlete, but wouldn't a blotter line do like it does for everyone else?

Except for the violation of team rules...a 3 game suspension perhaps, the State of Ohio is going to penalize her plenty for the high BAC.

I don't think it warrants any penalty beyond 3 games. She'll have a Driver Intervention Program and high risk insurance and sanctions for the next 3-5 years.

It's the same penalty an adult gets. Please don't make her wear an OVI jersey.

I don't know. Curt Miller always seemed like the anti-Gregg Brandon in that he'd be more of a disciplinarian. Her suspension will be more than three games I'm guessing.

Whatever happens, it's a shame. McCoy can definitely ball.

If you put the WBGU report and the BG news story together, she was probably cieted for a lane change without a signal and OVI. One was a probable cause for the other and it's true, anyone out after midnight has no reason to be....

While OVI is a serious offense, as Niki will soon learn, it just doesn't seem to compare with B&E looking for an illegal drug. Call me crazy, but I think one is just a tad more serious than the other. Now it's up to the State and others to educate her of what could have happened, but part of her punisment, and maybe her community service is that she use this experience to educate others.

Trust me, It's not a trivial offense and the penalty is harsh, but it shouldn't be life destroying if it can be used as an educational example.

It's a shame, she'll learn her lesson. But reading the statement from Miller

Makes me want to send my daughter that doesn't exist to BG to play for him. He's really a class act and always has time to stop and talk when I see him on campus.

The only update is the list of charges. The driving while suspended isn't a big deal (as far as her BG playing time should be concerned). The big deal is the OVI/DUI/whatever they're calling it now a days

Never understood this logic. It's OK for students that aren't athletes to stay out until the bars close. I don't see why a basketball player can't go out and have a good time. I'm not advocating drunk driving, there are safe ways to get home. But her status as an athlete shouldn't prevent her from staying out past midnight.

Here I respectfully have to disagree. When you agree to become a Division I athlete, you shed your "everyman" status, even if you are a student just the same as Joe Blow. But when Joe Blow gets a DUI, it's not news. When a scholarship athlete does, it is. I see no problem in how this, or any other college athlete in trouble with the law has been covered by the papers. When you're a stud athlete, expect to be held to a higher standard. People are too interested in college sports for athletes not to be.

To summarize, an athlete shouldn't be held to a higher standard than a normal student if they just want to go out and blow off a little steam downtown. Nothing is irresponsible about that. But if they do screw up, then they absolutly will and should be scrutinized more heavily because of their celebrity status.
