Women /Anderson Arena
Would the women be interested in stayinjg in Anderson with the volleyball team? Of course, with the prober renovations. It would be nice to keep them on campus, and I think they would rock the joint like never before.

If you want to attract even better athletes, i.e 6'4" or so players then we need better resources. Have you seen the locker rooms in AA. AA is outdated and if the women would like to play in AA you will be talking about millions in renovations. We have a new facility being built, lets utilize it! I don't even like the idea of 1 game in AA. You get used to your surroundings and once in the new Stroh Center I see no reason to ever play again in AA.
Nostalgia maybe? I would be cool with them playing one or 2 games every year at AA once Stroh is built, but I think they should use Stroh full-timegmartin wrote:If you want to attract even better athletes, i.e 6'4" or so players then we need better resources. Uh volleyball is going to the Stroh as well, only gymnastics wil be using AA. And to answer the question, no, like everyone else has said we'll have this brand new arena, no reason for just the men to play in itzete wrote:Would the women be interested in stayinjg in Anderson with the volleyball team? don't know about that, I'd rather use something I'm spending a few million on as much as possible.
I'm sure they could raise a few million to renovate AA. There are scores of female alumni in and around the BG region that would donate thousands of dollars if they could have the type of facility Memorial Hall could prove to be. With a blood transfusion, it could be a the crown jewel of womens basketball in the Midwest. The idenity of having a place like a cleaned up Anderson for womens athletics, I would think, would be a great recruiting tool.
Granted initially a hard sell with Strow in the immediate future, but I think it could go....

Guaranteed that if you asked every person on the women's basketball team, they would say no way to staying at AA....doesn't matter how much money you put into it, there is no way that you will have the quality or the room that you will have at the Stroh. AA has been good to BG, but i have no problem leaving it behind.

When AA was built in the early 1960s, it was constructed with the student population in mind. For the first ten years or so, university officials couldn’t have been happier with the results. Game after game, year after year, and three to four thousand students would parade coatless to Memorial Hall on foot to cheer on the men’s team. The general public, most of which were season ticket holders would fill the remaining fifteen hundred seats. Parking was never a problem as those with season tickets were able to park in the lot east of the arena. There was no reason the university should think the trend would discontinue. But then the NCAA appearance drought began: Two appearances from 1960 to 1970, and then nothing for the last forty years. The students attendance slowly spiraled downward to what you see now – 500 or so students in attendance for most home games is fairly common.
Now in light of these facts, what I am seeing transpire is a situation that very well may repeat itself after the novelty of Stroh Center is long gone. If the Falcons don’t upgrade their men’s program talent wise; the MAC put more teams into the NCAA field; fifteen years from now, students will not walk ½ - ¾ mile in the dead of winter to watch a mediocre basketball team. (Would building a new Rec Center near I-75 be a good idea?) Thus the same situation regarding apathy would again present itself – maybe worse.
So first off I don’t agree with removing facilities from campus. Thus, I would do everything humanly possible to keep the woman in Anderson mainly for the students. And I realize it is a no go - never will happen, but I have lived in this community for a long time and have a good feel of how things ebb and flow.

I thought about saying something like that too. I think what was meant is that Stroh won't be right smack in the heart of campus in the same way AA is. But yeah, I'm with you, it's still going to be on university owned land, which makes it on campus.murphdogg wrote:Um... While I agree that a good student attendance is important, the rest of the fanbase is equally important. Many fans find it quite hard to find a parking place for a weeknight game at Anderson Arena. That problem will be solved with the availability of parking at Stroh.
Also, as I said in another thread that touched on this subject, it is my opinion that it will be easier to compete for recruits with the new facilities, both for the men and women.

Why are some of you talking about the Stroh Center as if it is going to be located East of Meijer? You are either the laziest people that have ever lived, or you don't give others very much credit.

Get on board! The Stroh Center is going to be a tremendous facility. Our students can walk there- half plus of the quad students are closer to Stroh than Anderson.
I love Anderson- and we will win MAC gymnastics titles in that building. Count on it. But the Stroh Center will be at another level. A way higher level.
And our "community" of fans will get bigger. Alums and friends from outside the BG area will be much more likely to attend- and not for just one year. We do need to win in the building, but this is a multi decade move. It will be a show stopper.
Go Falcons!
