I heard on the radio that a fan was ejected near the end of the game... Anyone see this or know what happened?

It was an Akron fan, student from the looks of it. There was a group of, maybe 10 guys in the end by the BG bench, that were doing a lot of talking and yelling during the game. I really couldn't make out much of what they were yelling. For the better part of the game, what I am assuming was an Akron athletic dept. employee was standing in the corner between the end of BG's bench and the seats at that end. Also, at some point later in the game, what I am assuming was a campus cop went over to stand in the same area.

Toward the very end of the game, Coach Miller walked down to that end of the BG bench, and I THINK said something. The Akron employee must have found it amusing because he was smiling, as was Coach Miller, but one fan seemed to get very irate and was ejected from the game.

As I said, I am not sure Coach Miller said anything at all, and if he did, it didn't appear to be directed to any fan in particular.

These same guys kept holding up a rather poorly drawn "sign" that was supposed to be a bottle of Red Stripe.

I was sitting four rows from the floor behind the BG trainers who are sitting at the very end of the BG bench, and here are a couple of my observations:

First off: If the MAC has a uniform "fan sportsmanship" rule that is to be read at every MAC game (like they announce at our home games,) then I believe Akron does a horrendous job of enforcing it, as there was a UNIFORMED police officer standing next to the four rows of seats where the "vocalists" were doing their thing the ENTIRE game. And I mean the ENTIRE game. We're talking yelling "Curt! Curt! Curt!"; chanting "Captain Jack", yelling "Point One Seven Eight!", and of course waving the cardboard cut out of the alcohol bottle during BG's free throws at that end of the court during the second half. (Congrats to Niki for nailing two of them with a minute or so left in the game - - those were HUGE!!!)

But then again, what do we expect from immature, questionably sober college students? A better question would be what can we expect from the supposed adults in the arena - uniformed police officers and/or the marketing folks (who are UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES and are right there next to the fans in question) who do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING?!

At one point during the game, the phrase "bunch of alcoholics" was yelled, and the woman referee named Carol really spun around and gave the front row a stare down. It calmed things down for a little bit - - but there was just too much fervent "ammunition" in their stockpiles for them to NOT start again. I mean, we were being double whammied.........Niki was returning to her first game after the suspension AND - - she was PLAYING in Rhodes Arena for the FIRST time NOT wearing an Akron uniform. It was too much fuel for the fire. And so, they kept firing away.......

All the way to the end of the game - - and when the end result was certain of a BG win, Curt got up off the bench and was inadvertently scratching the side of his nose. Well, the onslaught came of "CURT! CURT! CURT!" Coach finally looked over at them and the front row of hooligans were mocking him with their own fingers stuck up their noses. Coach Miller - being the good sport he is - (and with a WIN assured), smirked and walked down the end of the BG bench toward the "vocalists" and...........(here it comes) STILL smiling said: "That's 23 in a row." while holding up two fingers in one hand and three in another. It wasn't snotty or yelled - - just said in a normal tone of voice with a BIG, HUGE, smile on his face.

WELL - - do you think those college students could resist that? And so, something was said by one of the "groupies." What was said was undecipherable to me, but obviously NOT to the uniformed police officer, who perhaps was compelled to act because the opposing head coach was standing right there?! Maybe?!

The officer took "loose lips" by the arm and escorted him out of the gym - -but let the world know this fact: the officer was smiling rather broadly himself as he did it. Hmmmm........maybe it was a really good one-liner that the Akron student retorted with, who knows?

I took my 73 year-old parents to the game who are from the Massillon area, as well as my 11 year-old nephew. Although my nephew enjoyed the "entertainment value" of the "sideshow", I know my parents were disgusted. Probably a generational thing. My dad didn't think it was wise for Curt to say anything to the Akron folks, while my mom said "Good for HIM!". I had to almost restrain my mother AFTER the game - - because she wanted to go down and ask the Akron ring leader "How many years is it going to take you to graduate from college?" since she remembered his mouth from two years ago.

I have no problem with fans rooting for their team and perhaps even trying to make noise to distract the opposing team. But for a university to allow the unsportsmanlike conduct of fans DIRECTLY taunting and verbally harassing opposing coaches and players is absolutely inexcusable in my book. I'm ready to write my letter to the Akron Athletic Director, copy in the MAC Commissioner, as well as the Akron University President.

BUT - - KUDOS AND BRAVO all the way around to the BG players, coaches, managers, and trainers - - all of whom I'm SURE had sore necks at the end of the game from purposefully looking toward the RIGHT and NEVER making eye contact with the idiots who were on their left.........BUT PROPS ESPECIALLY for our team finding a way to WIN, yet again! I am SO PROUD!

That reminds me of an incident at a Wisconsin-Michigan State men's b-ball game a few years back. One of Michigan State's players had recently gotten a DUI or underage, I can't remember which, and the Wisconsin student section sang "99 Bottles of beer on the wall" while he was shooting free throws. Kind of funny at the time, but immature in retrospect. The university reprimanded the fans for their behavior after the game. I can only hope Akron does the same with theirs

I had a feeling something like that may happen at this game, part of the reason why I wish I could have gone. Curt's reaction really didn't surprise, reminds me of the Western game, except he did the walk to the end of the bench at the beginning of the game. Gets that smile and look on his face and walks to the end of the bench, I always find it great, I doubt he said anything bad he just doesn't seem like that type of person.

Thanks for supplying the details of what happened. We were sitting more toward the top of that section, and, as I said, we really couldn't tell what they were yelling.

Did you notice the big guy in the grey sweatshirt. He and the cop/AD employee got into a verbal back-and-forth about something. I suppose they told him to cool it, but maybe not.

I agree, something more probably should have been done, but the players, coaches and staff all seemed to handle it pretty well.

So that is what Coach Miller said/did. It probably would have been best to just continue to ignore the juvenile behavior, but I can't really say I blame him.
