Man, we gotta get a serious inside game or we're gonna struggle against teams that like to slow it way down. Why Curt Miller hasn't gone after some talented big girls I'll never know. Our recuiting class for next year has only one girl at 6'1 and the rest are guards or small forwards. What is Coach Millers thinking? :coo-coo: How does he expect a team that is soon going to be filled with nothing but point guards , shooting guards and forwards and most of them shorter than 6'0 going to compete with these teams that have tall center that dominates the middle of the paint. We don't have that all this team. Yeah , its great that nearly all of the players have range from 3pt. land, but thats not going to win us games. Teams with strong inside games win championships not teams that just hoist 3's all day long. I'm wondering if Coach Miller gets this.

GO BG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEAT YOUNGSTOWN ST.!!!!!!!!!!!! :supz:

I swear this is the last time I'll get sucked into replying to your elementary tirades. You should talk to Matt Lineger -- maybe he could sneak onto the women's hoops team.

I don't know if you noticed lately, but women taller than about 6'2 are kind of hard to find. It's not that we don't recruit them -- it's that don't exist.

Have you even gone to a game? Did you notice that Liz Honegger is pretty damn good? And you know what? She's 5-11.

Against Duquesne, she started against 6-3 Maria Stankevich.

TOT-FG 3-PT REBOUNDS
No. N A M E FG-FGA FG-FGA FT-FTA OF DE TOT PF TP A TO BLK S MIN
13 HONEGGER, Liz c 3-14 2-6 0-1 6 7 13 1 8 2 1 2 4 34
45 Stankevich, Maria c 3-10 0-1 5-7 2 9 11 4 11 0 2 3 0 28

Statistically, Liz did better than her taller counterpart in 3-pointers, offensive rebounds, total rebounds, personal fouls, assists, turnovers, blocks, and steals.

She had an unusual off night from the field, but had the better game. You can't teach tall and you can't teach talent either -- but to pine for the former is ridiculous.

No offense to you Falconboy because I agree with a lot of your posts, but I have to agree with Rollalong on this one. We lost a close game on the road to a team that just happened to play a little bit better than us, that's all. It's way too early in the season to start bashing Coach Miller and questioning his recruiting. Look at the talent he has brought in lately. This team will be fine and I don't think there is a problem with Coach Miller's recruiting. In fact, I think his recruiting has been pretty good lately. We went to the MAC Title Game last year with a mostly-freshman lineup. We'll be fine. Let's all get to AA Tuesday for the game against YSU and cheer these ladies on! This team is going to win a lot of games this season.

As a coach at the Junior College level and get to talk to a lot of DI coaches during the summer and throughout the year, everyone is looking for that girl that is 6'1 and above, but the problem is, there just aren't enough out there for all of us. All of the girls that tall are going big DI wether they have a lot of talent or not. The rest of the schools just have to go out there and find a girl that can bang with the big girls and go get the ball. So I don't think that you can fault Coach Miller on not having a girl that is a "true" center. What kind of tempo do we play? I really don't know because I haven't been able to see a game since Coach Miller came to town. But I will tell you that we had a 5'10 "center" last year that led the nation in rebounding with 16 rebounds a game, and we play in one of the toughest conferences in the Junior College level, and by the end of the year, there were a lot of Big 12 and other DI's that wanted her. So let's not worry about how tall they are, but how tall they play.

I totally understand you Falconboy but you must realize we aren't going to have to play any other OSU teams with 6'5 centers. Our inside game isn't going as strong as it has been but they have only played 4 games. This is still a young team and I say give it a few more games and see how the post players develop as the year goes on.

I don't see a need for post bashing either. Falconboy posted a concern he sees that isn't an elementary tirade or him whinning. I would love to get a 6'2+ girl to tear it up down low as well, but our team hasn't really had a dominate post player since Ratterman and I think we are doing just fine the way we are so I doubt the coaching staff sees it as a concern at the momment. We have many players that can play multiple positions and that throws defenses off just because we can have many different styles of line-ups for them to try to guard.

And let's not forget, Ratterman was only 6'0, and she was was undersized against a lot of her competition. She was never really that comfortable playing center, she would have loved to have been a 4, but had to play the 5.

We will bounce back and pound the Penguins ( kind of weird, I love penguins and now I am talking about pounding them). We played hard but Duquesne just played a little harder. Coach Miller is still trying to find just the right line up to get us the best result. I have complete confidence in him. I would rather start off a little slow out of the gate and then start getting hot just in time for our MAC season and the MAC Championship, then beat people now and lose a bunch of MAC games.

Great post, Michelle...we do have some new players and finding the best chemistry will take some time. But you can bet Coach Miller and his staff are working their tails off to get it done. They WILL be a force. Coach Miller is doing a tremendous job.

GO HOOPS!

Wow, you have no idea

Look at Miami or Eastern Mich. last year

I believe that one of those teams had 2 girls that were over 6'3. Miami (OH) , just a MAC team. I know that there arent' TONS of them out there , but they are out there. They don't have to be Lindsay Daventport either. But it seems that we are severly exposed when we play a team that has moderatly talented post girl at least 6'2 or taller. Liz can play pretty reasonably against girls that are maybaye 6'1 ,but taller than that , unless the girl is a complete stiff , she has problems, mainly lateral movement wise. I just heard Coach Miller tonight at Fricker's Coaches Show that he likes the 3 pt. shot alot. Hey, so do I but it never wins you championships. Being able to shoot the 3 really well does help alot , but usually it really kills teams when you have a dominating post presence to draw the defense away for open looks. We don't have anything that resembles a post game outside of Ali Mann. Our only other talented 6'1 girl Thorburn doesn't play in the paint at all. As far as our only 6'2 girls Kapfur and Lause , there isn't much to say at this point.

And if our hope is to be a constant run up and down the floor team , that won't work either. You can't get tons of steals against every opponent if their decent at handling the ball. Right now I see a team that is one faceted. Shoot 3's and hope for the best. That my friends is a mediocre philosophy in my humble opinon. :|

GO BG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRUSH YOUNGSTOWN ST.!!!!!!!!!!! :supz:

falconboy, I don't know you at all so for all I know you're a good guy in "real life", but you have this really annoying habit of tying your evaluations of players in every sport from football to women's basketball to height and weight. Do you even watch the games or do you just check the scorecard beforehand to see which team measures up?

You also have a habit of implying that an athlete need not bother competing if they aren't the prototype physically for thier position (in some cases, you state this opinion as a fact) Do you have any idea at all of how insulting that notion is to an athlete? I can think of no bigger insult you could throw at a player than to suggest that a variable like height or weight overrides talent, heart and preparation in determining who comes out on top. I really wish you'd consider the importance of these factors before you post another diatribe criticizing our athletes for being shorter than you'd prefer them to be.

I can account for Falconboy being at all the basketball games...do not jump his back about that. Like everyone else, he states his opinions. If you don't like them, don't read them. It's not that difficult!

If you don't like what I wrote, why did you read it and respond to it?

Do you see how poorly that line of reasoning stands up to the slightest scrutiny?
