RPI after Toledo Loss

Before the Toledo game our RPI according Realtime RPI was 46.
Sunday, the day after our loss our RPI is 41. How is it possible that we rose 5 spots??? With a loss??? FWIW, Toledo RPI was 78, and now it is 61.
In the Sagarin Ratings we slipped from 47 to 49, not too bad. If we win out and make it to the MAC Championship game I feel pretty confident that we will be on the bubble. Of course, 11 straight wins would guarantee us a spot.

Well, the way the RPI works, if you play a team that's good, chances are your RPI won't fall much even if you lose, especially if it's a close game. Obviously if you win, that gives you a huge boost. Likewise, for every horrible team you face, you're probably going to fall in the RPI even if you win by 50.
This is why earlier this year I made such a big stink about us playing Youngstown State and their 337 RPI. We fell about 20 spots despite the fact that we won by 30. If that game had been replaced with a game against, say, Xavier or Dayton, for example, even a loss against any of those teams would have been a much better outcome. It's games like those against teams like YSU and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville that have really killed our ratings these last few years. Unfortunately, that isn't likely to change since most BCS schools avoid BG like the plague.

It's just like Boise State in football. No one wants to commit to a Home and Home and there is no way in the world that Curt should start rolling over and saying "Fine, we'll come play you at your place and not make you return the favor." Stay strong, win out and beat the big girls in the Dance!

We weren't going to get an at-large if we ran the table to a macc loss. We certainly aren't going to get one now.
Just win, baby.

Agreed. I almost willing to bet that after our 3rd loss, we had no shot at an at large bid. It sucks, but thats the way it goes.
As has been said, I'd much rather work out these kinks and lose now, than in march.

Again, I don't even know why you follow the team with that kind of an attitude. If we never had a shot at an at large in the first place, why even watch any of the regular season games? After all, if we win or lose, it don't mean jack, according to the way you think.
I guess on this issue I've a bit of a peregrinner-esque streak. You can't count your chickens before they hatch. We haven't lost to a team outside of the RPI top 70 all year, our record is good, and if we win out the rest of the way before the MACC it'll be 24-5. We've got a great quality win against Vandy and several other decent wins as well, most notably Eastern Michigan. Count those up, plus an RPI in the lower to mid 30s, and the committee might still give us the shaft, but several other teams got in with such credentials last year, so you can't count it out.

You watch the regular season because:
-you're a real fan of the team
-you like to watch the team develop
-you love basketball
-because each player and each coach only stays so long
Gotta be real - an NCAA at-large would be an unexpected gift that you have no control over. Win in March or done - no reason to set the expectations lower because an invitation might be sent. The conference is getting closer to 2 bids but until it happens only winners control their destiny.

And those teams were in the Big East, ACC, Big Ten, PAC 10. Not in the MAC, MEAC, C-USA, CAA.

I can count it out, because it isn't going to happen. It's a very simple concept.
And I follow the team because I'm a fan, not just because they're doing well, which is just one more thing that makes you and me very different.

Odd post for a fan of a team the quality of BG's. Hell, I'm still following UT's men-why follow BG's men- you KNOW they got no chance at an at-large. You follow them for all the reasons JFH and FT stated. Sheesh!

Well, I guess I'm just different. The way I see it, if you've got no shot to reach the NCAA tournament, which is the ultimate goal for all 339 D-IA teams, by playing well in the regular season, then the regular season is a completely worthless exercise. It's almost as though they shouldn't even bother playing it, because even if you go 26-3 or 0-29, it's still going to come down to 3 or 4 games in Cleveland at the conference tournament.
What needs to happen is that conference tournaments in college basketball need to be eliminated, and the regular season champion should go to NCs. This whole process we have now renders the regular season as nothing more than a 29-game exhibition which means nothing.
The knowledge that we are going to get screwed again, a la 2009, has sapped all the fun out of this season for me.
H2O - just for the record, I NEVER followed BG's men until that Dakich got canned (thank god), and I never really got into following them on a daily basis until last year, not surprisingly the first year they've been good since the early part of the decade. I would not even give two seconds of my time to team as pathetic as UT's men's basketball team. Why? Just watching that would be bring tears to my eyes on account of their terrible play. I would be literally embarrassed to call myself a fan of a team that bad. Ideally after watching a sporting event I want to be happy, not frustrated and angry, or worse, de-sensitized to such hideous play.
And with that, I've made my last post on this forum until the MAC tournament. Thanks J4H for convincing me that my time is more worthwhile than watching some meaningless regular season MAC games. Smell ya later.

Ah, fairweather fan. Gotcha. Nothing wrong with that. Did you recently become a huge New Orleans fan? Occasionally like the MArlins really well?

Um, I thought the goal was to win the conference. I'm not sure most of the 339 teams got a memo that says the be-all-end-all of existence is to play in a NCAA tourney. Same is true in football, hockey, lots of other sports. If playing in the NCAA tourney were the goal, then BGSU and most of the 339 teams should simply stop playing. Because as soon as you get your wish, then you'll start saying the ultimate goal is actually to win the NCAA tourney, which is such a ludicris goal to dwell on, all but a dozen teams should simply quit the sport. (again, not unlike football, and other sports.)

Funny that he mentions following men's hoops at BG for the last year, since they've been "worthless" since 1968. Those MAC championships don't mean a thing, 24.
