Women's mids
Good Morning – I am doing a piece on Mid-Major Women’s Basketball vs the BCS. I am putting together a top 10 Mids list covering the last 5 years – here is what I have so far
1. Gonzaga – 4/5 NCAA trips an Elite 8 & Sweet Sixteen finish
2. Marist – 5/5 NCAA trips – 1 Sweet Sixteen & 2nd round finishes
3. Wisc-GB – 4/5 NCAA trips - 1 Sweet Sixteen & 2nd round finishes – the WNIT keeps them below Marist
4. Bowling Green – 3/5 NCAA trips – 1 Sweet Sixteen
5. Mid-Tenn St. – 4/5 NCAA trips – only 1 2nd round finish
6. Hartford – 3/5 NCAA trips – 1 2nd round finish
7. JMU – 3/5 NCAA trips – granted ODU and JMU hurt each other
8. ODU – 2/5 NCAA trips - 1 Sweet Sixteen but also 1 no post season
9. Liberty – 3/5 NCAA trips – never past 1st rd
Yes I only have 9 can’t pick 10th
What do all these successful Mids have in common is they all have retained their head coaches (except Wisc-GB who just lost theirs). If this was the men’s side these coaches would have been gobbled up by bigger conferences. Is it because the pay scale is not a dramatic as on the men’s? Why am I posting here? I would like to get some input on your school….
Has your HC been approached by bigger schools?
How many have your players gone Pro? (Europe/US)
What is the fan support like?
Have you lost any good players to transfer to the “bigger” schools?
Have you had good players transfer in from a “bigger” school?
Also go ahead make an argument if you think I ranked your school too low…. Thanks

Has your HC been approached by bigger schools?
YES. Fortunately over the past few years, we have been able to weather the storm. This year probably scared us many of us the most with his name out there for four or five positions.
How many have your players gone Pro? (Europe/US)
Lauren Prochaska has been invited to the Seattle Storm training camp.
Allie Mann played overseas a couple of years. Not sure if Kate played overseas (know she flirted with the idea)
What is the fan support like?
Very strong support from our fans for the team (and vice versa). We average a little under 2,000 a game.
Here's a comment from the coach -
Nothing beats our fans! At home, on the road, at the MAC Tournament or at the NCAA's - you are the best!
I wanted to take this opportunity to give a heartfelt thank you to our fans for helping to make this season such a special one. It was an unbelievable run – a 7th divisional championship, a 7th straight MAC Championship with the MAC Tournament Championship, an overall record of 28-5, and the graduation of six amazing seniors. But none of this would have been as special as it was if it weren’t for you, our fans. Your support is so fantastic, I can’t put into words just how much it means to our team and our program. There is a reason we’ve won 46 of our last 48 games here at home, and why coaches like Quentin Hillsman from Syracuse said “it was an honor to play in such a great college basketball atmosphere” or why Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw said our “crowd is amazing”. YOU make this place special as much as any player ever has, and YOU make this place a difficult place for opponents to be successful! But not only that, you travel as well as ANY fans in the country, and it motivates our kids more than anything when they see more orange in the stands than the colors of the other team, and we’re on the road!
Just prior to tip-off against Central Michigan in the MAC Tournament Semi-Finals, CMU Head Coach Sue Guevara approached me on our bench and pointed to the sea of orange and said “Your fans are fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. I just had to come down here and tell you that. They’re amazing. I could only hope that someday we have a following like you do.” I don’t think I could’ve said it better myself.
Thank you, so very, very, very much, for the love and support you’ve shown our team this year. Next year when we open the Stroh Center we’ll be opening it with five freshmen, and we’ll continue to need your support more than ever. It may be a new building, but it will STILL be the House that Roars, thanks to you!
Gratefully Yours,

Have you lost any good players to transfer to the “bigger” schools?
No. We've lost a few players for various reasons (one thought she deserved playing time and was going to head to a Big 10 school, she ended up at another mid-major; another wanted to attend an HBCU; a couple were mysteries)
Have you had good players transfer in from a “bigger” school?
We had a young lady transfer from Oregon for a year. We just graduated a young lady who transferred in from St. Louis (she played two years for us and was a team captain both years). Another transfer from DePaul is currently on the squad and this fall we look forward to watching a young lady that transferred from Duke University.
Also go ahead make an argument if you think I ranked your school too low…. Thanks
I think you got us in a nice spot.

Even though we outdraw you at home, I am very impressed by BG's fan support, particularly on the road and especially at Quicken Loans. Hopefully ours gets a lot better...

Re: Women's mids
Thanks for info ... do you happen to know if any of the women who transferred in had BGSU on their radar prior to signing with "bigger" school
Re: Women's mids
Ali is currently playing in Portugal. In fact, her team won the Federation Cup, the Portugal Cup, and the playoffs this season.transfer2BGSU wrote:How many have your players gone Pro? (Europe/US)

Re: Women's mids
The most fair way to describe a list like this one is Non AQ BCS. So, if it could be noted that some fans bristle when the slur 'mid-major' is used, that would be appreciated.
Has the BG women's basketball coach been considered by schools in conferences with more financial resources than his current employer? Yes. He has probably been in contact with schools that have more students, which I assume would also qualify as "bigger."

Re: Women's mids
Yes, most of the players who have transferred to BG from bigger schools were recruited by BG. The transfer from Oregon, St Louis and DePaul were recruited heavily by BG but chose to begin their playing days at another school. They then remembered BG when they decided to transfer. We have been successful in that respect.

Re: Women's mids
You would be surprised at the number of other schools who are telling the same story -
I have a number of interviews where the recruit talks about how they should have gone to the transfer school to begin with. Some talk about how even though they played in much bigger/nicer facilities they where empty no passion from the fans - no local support.
Much rather play infront of a full house then empty arena

I was really intrigued to read this post, until I realized it wasn't about women's MINDS, but instead women's MIDS. I thought somebody had finally found the answer to the ultimate question.

I was unaware she went back. Last I heard, she was an assistant at IPFW.jacojdm wrote: Ali is currently playing in Portugal. In fact, her team won the Federation Cup, the Portugal Cup, and the playoffs this season.

I think the better answer to this is that several of our young ladies have already been selected as asst. coaches in women's basketball, One is at Ohio U., Kate is at (St. Bonaventure I believe), Ali WAS at IUPUI, but obviously is playing abroad, Liz Honecker (sp) was a HS coach for a few yrs.; not sure what she's doing now.... And ALL of these ladies were on the "sweet 16" team.... so it'll be interesting to see if any of this year's Srs. follow suit.

Re: Women's mids
Megan Thorburn is asst.coach at Ohio U
Kate is currently at St. Bonaventure
Liz is presently asst. coach at West Virginia Tech. It's an NAIA institution.
Ali was an asst. coach at IPFW for two seasons.
Other players from the Curt Miller era (continuing!!) are working on Masters degrees, teaching, employed in various other capacities.
The best part is they all received their degrees and were really successful basketball team members......yet even better people across the board. That trend continues.
Another item to look at when checking out playing places.

Anyone know what Lindsey Goldsberry is doing? She was in a class with my daughter. Very nice young lady.

I think BG is right on the money at #4 in this ranking....and there are some damn fine programs on that list.
