MAC Referees

Why can't something be done about the quality of MAC women's referees? They are very uneven and continue to make bone-head mistakes. The crew of Tom Hallead, Todd Moistner and Kathy Ridilla have cemented their place in the Refereeing Hall of Shame. Five times BG was called for illegal screens and three of those, the BG player never moved. Northern had two players who lived in the paint in the second half, and they were called for "3 seconds" only once. The game got very chippy in the second half, and these officials did nothing to control it. Does a player have to go down before this grabbing, hitting, pushing stops? Many more problems, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

The officials are not MAC officials. You can see that last year, Kathy Ridilla reffed all over the East Coast and throughout the Midwest.

For the current year -

Seems pretty obvious to me that you have to be in the stands to officiate. So much an official misses while on the floor.

I was watching on TV and was wondering the same thing about the illegal screen calls. A couple were legitimately illegal, but once they were calling that for any screen set by any of our players, we stopped setting screens and our offense began to struggle.

Jennifer stated at the Coaches' Show that she didn't understand the illegal pick calls
that it made it hard to call plays because the majority of our plays contain picks
yes people were up in arms about it (reffing)& I don't want anyone hurt
players were able to play through it which they have done on several occasions
we get what we get because higher level leagues (read money here) pull the more experienced refs their way
we play a lot of same nights as these conferences
change the nights, pay more, evaluate tougher, become a ref........there's a class for that
Yes I yell at them but stop because it doesn't help I get T'd & must leave
just keep cheering for BG
as friend says "it is what it is"

Kathy Ridilla is normally a pretty good official. But those 3 on Sunday did not work together at all. That is a big key to officiating working together. All of them had bad days. One official was dominant and the others pretty much didn't do much. I don't know why that happened but hopefully they talked about it after the game was over in their dressing room. They do get evaluated every game (at least I think so). I don't know how much the evaluations count as to future assignments. As to the illegal screens, yes most of them were legal but I think the officials looked at the reaction of the NIU players to make some of their decisions not the position of the BG player. NIU bounced off at least a couple of times. They would throw up their arms as if they pushed. Sometimes you can convince an official that something happened when it didn't. NIU seems to very good at that. Lets hope the officials we get in the future are smarter than these three seemed to be on Sunday.

Absolutely correct. The whims of a crew (or an individual) and the histrionics of an opponent shouldn't have the power to completely force a team out of their entire gameplan. That's not how the game should be played or decided.
