With the hiring, Curt Miller officially comes out to the media, though he's been out for years within the WBB community.

Congrats to coach Miller!

His orientation wasn't exactly a secret here...does anyone care? Can we cross "sexual orientation" off the list of things to be weird about or do we have a ways to go yet?

In collegiate women's basketball we have a long ways to go. Negative recruiting still exists. I'm not sure if there are any openly gay or lesbian coaches in Division 1 women's basketball. Some schools go out of their way to publicize the fact that their women's basketball coach is married and has a family. Coaches are still very hesitant to reveal that they are gay or lesbian. Yes it was pretty well known about Curt when he was here in BG. But still he never really came out in the media. At women's basketball events, sure he would talk about his partner and the boys. I hope that someday this won't be a problem. But I don't see it anytime soon.

I would guess that local media privately invited Coach Miller to discuss it as part of a story focused on that fact if he wanted to. I would guess he didn't want to do that, for whatever reason, and that's okay.

Some trailblazers handle their role differently than others. I would compare it to black hockey players. Some don't mind talking about the fact that they are blazing a trail in an overwhelmingly white sport and the challenges they face. Others don't necessarily want to discuss it, for various reasons. Either way, that's okay.

Similar but different....black hockey players are very obviously black. Feeling like you can't just freely live your life because of someone else's moral code has to be extremely difficult. Why it has to be an issue at all is frustrating. When Michael Sam came out I got tired of hearing about it....it's sports. What should matter is what happens in the game...don't want to hear about gay players or coaches...white basketball players...black QB's...none of it. Don't care who Tiger Woods banged...don't care about Caitlyn Jenner but I loved Bruce Jenner's performance in the 76 Olympics. Don't care how many dick pix Brett Favre sent Jen Sterger.

Sports should be above these divisive, tawdry memes....

Right. like,

1. I didn't bet on baseball
2. I didn't bet on my team
3. I didn't bet on my team to lose :D

How long is a lifetime ban anyway???

I figure right after Shoeless Joe they can let Pete, Roger, and Barry in.
