It seems we continue to live and die by the three ball. Thursday night we died by it, not only in our inability to make them, but also our inability to defend the three ball of the Bearcats. We continue to be anemic in our post play, with sophomore Uecker leading the way scoring two points! The only veteran center we have on the roster is junior Maddie Cole, and her minutes are minimal at best. Otherwise we have three true freshmen and a red-shirt freshman. Besides, Uecker was 0-3 from 3-point land. Why is she taking those kinds of shots? It scares me every time we pass inside, because when we do, bad things usually happen, such as a mishandled pass, held ball, blocked shot, or three second call. Where is the leadership going to come from among our centers? Why do we even try to incorporate a center into the offense when that position isn't carrying their own weight on the floor? Madisen Parker was the only contributor off the bench with two three-pointers for six points. The rest of the subs were scoreless. Which of our post players are capable of dominating the paint on both ends of the floor? At this point, none of them. I believed all season long that Sierra Thompson showed a lot of promise down low, but the Bearcats height and quickness readily exposed the freshman's inexperience amongst the trees.
Although Santoro scored fifteen points, the rest of her offensive attributes were highly inconsistent, with traveling calls, bad passes, and shots that never drew iron. I believe we have a lot of talent at the guard and forward positions this year, but the post players have got to get their act together, where a couple of those players need to step up and be worthy of the playing time they're getting. Is there not one coach on the current staff that knows how to develop our centers to be competitive at this level? It doesn't appear so. We are still very fortunate to be 8-3 at this point, but if I was an opposing coach playing against BG, my game plan would be to shut down the Falcons' three-point game. If I were successful in doing that, what other strategy would Coach Roos have that she could implement? Pound it inside? NOT!!! Fast break them to death? Not hardly!!! Just saying, I'm calling them like I see them. I have no intention of being a "wet blanket", but there are still some obvious factions of this team that really need to be addressed if Coach Roos wants a well-balance team that can compete in a much-improved Mid-American Conference. As always, just my honest opinion. Roll Along, Falcons!!!
