Time For A Recap
The preseason Fleming Injury and the two blowouts against very, very good teams seems to have taken a big bite out of the enthusiasm for the current Women's season from Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba standpoint. However, the team has righted itself partly to straightening out individual roles and getting Elissa Brett back from an injury. They played well in the two losses in the Navy tournament. Losing in OT to George Mason and by 4 to what is now a 11-1 Liberty team. In both those games the team fell way behind early, mounting furious challenges that just fell short. So the next three games have all been wins against teams that we likely would be favored to beat if any of the what now seems like hundreds of on-line gambling sites would ever dare to put a betting line out, but I digress. BG put away Valpo by 16 but withstood a challenge in the 2nd half before rebuilding the lead. Followed that up with a blowout as should happen against Notre Dame College and then last night beat a decent Oakland team on short notice by 12, a lead they comfortably held throughout much of the game. The team has grown and has gotten contributions from a variety of players including new additions this year. Transfer Morgan Sharps leads the scoring from off the bench at 13 a game and is shooting 57% from 3. Freshman Zoe Miller has added some size in the middle and a good scoring touch around the basket. Another Frosh Amy Velasco had two big games lately and shows speed from the guard position. Freshman Jocelyn Tate leads the team in rebounding again while coming off the bench. Kenzie Lewis who is sometimes frustrating scoring-wise is averaging 4 assists a game and is a ball hawk on rebounds for a guard. All in all, they seem to be jelling with a solid 10 person rotation. Will the team rise to the level that was possible with Fleming leading the way-- probably not but they appear to be heading in the right direction. They do have to consistently overcome a rebounding edge and are undersized for today's game. Next up is a UT-Martin team that has played a tough schedule and is just 3-7. Their tourney game with Akron was cancelled due to Covid breakout in Akron's teamGo . Let's hope we avoid that in the coming weeks. Go BG
