The NCAA owns the NIT but not the WNIT. It has been trying to purchase it for years but the WNIT isn't interested. Officially the NCAA claims it was "...created to ensure equity between the NCAA's men's and women's basketball postseason opportunities, the WBIT does not replace any existing event and will instead be held as a separate NCAA-funded entity." I'm happy we're still playing because the postseason is always fun, but the WNIT means less this year because of it.
