I have been following BG Women all year, missed only 2 games all year and that was due to surgery. I went to New Mexico and just got back from Seattle. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what is up with Megan Thorburn. She seems to be in Miller's doghouse. I been following the women all year, but I cant recall any incidents where she got yelled at or chewed out during the game. Must be something in practice.
She started early in the year. Was the leading scorer when we played Ohio State, scored 26 points the second game of the year against IPFW, 16 against Winthrop, but did not start.
Did Horne just win the starting job from her, or did something happen during practice that we were not aware of?

I'm not sure..........
Megan Thorburns is an interesting player, not sure where her roles is yet on the team. Carine seems to have won the 3 spot from her over the past months primarily because Carine has been better shooting from the field. I'd like to have her height at the 3 for next year if she gets better shooting the 3 and is decent defensively. Carine is quicker and is more athletic than Megan though. Its possible that Carin could be moved to a 2 spot unless McDowell solidfies her spot at the 2. Personally I'd like to see a starting 5 next year that consists of Achter at pg , Horne at sg , Thorburn at sf, Ali Mann at pf, and Honneger at center. I think that lineup would give us a good mixture of size and athletisizm.

Re: Megan Thorburn
I wondered the same thing, 72. I know Megan played a lot of minutes last year but I think Carin just beat her out. Megan is a talented player...I hope she can earn more minutes next year.bgsufan1972 wrote:I have been following BG Women all year, missed only 2 games all year and that was due to surgery. I agree Thorburn has talent- plenty of it. I would think that a woman of her talent level will have an important role on the team next season and beyond.
But....
You need confidence- in yourself. You need to play extra tough in practice when there is a lot of competition. You need to take care of the ball when it is in your hands. And you need to be aggressive.
I am not at practice. I would only say that, of the above items, only one looks like a key to this year's results. Confidence. Play with confidence.
Carin Horne is very, very good in my opinion. I think Megan Thorburn can be/is a similar player. I thought Horne played with confidence when in the line up. I though Thorburn seemed to lack confidence when in the line up.
Then again, I could be full of Seattle coffee!
Good luck to all our Falcon women and I applaud the team's commitment to get stronger etc. Next year, let's just go Sweet Sixteen! Nothing like big dreams.

Looking at last year's team, I thought Megan had as much natural ability as any of the freshmen. There isn't a lot that she can't do athletically. In fact, I thought she'd develop into the most complete player of the bunch.
That could still happen, but she has to WANT that to happen. One of the things I admire about Horne is that she'll take the open shot even if she's missed the last few. That's the shooter's mentality that Megan needs to develop

On Thorburn.....
Megan also needs in my opinion to work on her ball handling. That is probably reason number one why Horne won the job at sf , is becuase Horne can handle the ball ALOT better than Megan at this point. Hopefully Megan will work hard throughout the summer on this and her shooting and she'll get a chance to win a starting job at sf. I really like to see her 6'1, give us a size avantage over some teams at the 3 position.

Megan probably doesn't get as much playing time as others for the same reason that Sakima never did or Amber Flynn and Whitney Taylor didn't this year. The caoches probably see something in practice that they don't like and so it reflects in their playing time. I don't understand why some palyers get more playign time than others anymore than any of the rest of you do but they are the coaches so I don't question their decisions.
