I'm not exactly sure where the scholarship opening comes from. They have 1 open spot now (vacated by Groover) and 2 seniors. I believe they already had 3 verbals (Laura Bugher, Sarah Clapper, and Tara Breske). I had assumed that with Gompers remaining on scholarship, they wouldn't be able to fill that spot, but perhaps that isn't true.

Baker to Bowling Green

Brownsburg High School senior center Hannah Baker has made an oral commitment to accept a scholarship to play basketball at Bowling Green University in Ohio.
Baker, a 6-foot-3-inch Indiana Junior All-Star, averaged 15 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots last season.
She was named to The Star's All-West first team.

6'3"? That's pretty good height there. Bowling Green University...where is that?

I may be wrong on this, but I think the University gives her a scholarship that is the same as the BB one she got, but it isn't a BB scholarship. It wouldn't be very smart to keep a player on a team scholarship if she can no longer play. It would hurt not only the current team, but also recruiting. I envision a loop hole somewhere that allows this.

I suspect you are probably absolutely right about the scholarship Gompers is now on, not being a true BB scholarship at this point.

But I very much disagree on the statement "it wouldn't be very smart to keep a player on a team scholarhip if she can no longer play". If there was not another alternative, I think that would indeed be the thing to do. Not only would yanking the scholarship be a rather rotten thing to do, I actually think taking it away would hurt recruiting not help it. Also keep in mind, women's basketball is allowed 2 more scholarhips than the men's game. Playing with 14 scholarships for two years would probably be much less detrimental to a program than taking a reputation hit for dumping an injured player.

Right, Probably not the best phrasing. I meant that to imply that Universities would do what they can to give that student a scholarship yet not effect the number of players on the team with scholarships (ie, still 14 scholarship players). Most Universities are pretty good about this. In fact I think those athletes on the Men's teams that were cut were allowed to keep their scholarships until they graduated/or it would have naturally expired (eligibility would have been all used). MSU did this when they cut their men's gymnastics team.

Right you are PGY. My sister was a jumper for Drexel on scholarship before they cut the team. She was a freshman at the time but was allowed to keep her scholarship until she graduated (on time).

To that point PGY, I agree completely. And heck, from what I understand about Jule Gompers, she probably could qualify for some academic scholarships as well.

And Freak, so long as they know we're in Ohio I don't get too riled up. Although, you'd think a major newspaper like the Indianapolis Star would do better.

Okay nice, I hope she's decently athletic too. Having a 6'3 or taller center with with plus the athletes we have in Achter , Horne , Mann and Honneger we could get "real" dangerous.

I haven't heard of Clapper before. Any other news on her like state and hs she's from?

FYI, Baker is coming on an ACADEMIC scholarship!!!
