Copyright requests

Post by 87boneleader90 »

Hey, I am 91 BGSU grad and high school band director in VA. Getting copyright permission is not difficult but can be expensive. You need to contact the "company" that owns the music and put your request in writing. They will ask you what you are going to do with the music, who will play it, for what reason...etc.

Most artists will not object to your arranging their music but you may have to play a fee if they think you may try to sell the arrangement or distribute it in any way. I have done some arranging here at my school and have not come into any major issues with publishing companies but know thoe that have.

Hope this helps.

I just can't find the copyright holders for publishing in many instances...

it shouldn't be that tough. if you can't find the info on the recording's jacket, try contacting ascap and/or bmi, as they handle rights for many songwriters.

The worst part is that with the exception of one song I want to do (the Anthem by Good Charlotte) I purchased all of them legally...I just don't keep the papers. If anyone has that album, lemme know who the publisher is.
