Thats a big problem I have with the program being mandatory. Because of this time is being taken away from an academic class that the freshmen CHOSE to be a part of. I would think that takes precidence over an administrators pet program being rammed down their throats.

Agreed! I would love to know if the athletes have to participate as well. I can just hear Gregg Brandon's reaction when they told him that his players would be missing practice time for this program.

Kudos though to Dr. Hayward for fighting to keep the students at band as long as she possibly could. I also applaud her because it's not easy when half the band is missing. There's only so much she can do with the vets.

YES.

REMEMBER: Participation in the BGX program does not interfere with any practices. Practice may interfere with participation in the BGX program.

And Matt students do have a choice as to whether or not they wish to particpate in it. If they wish to attend BGSU, they particpate. If they desire to go elsewhere, they do not participate. Students are to adapt to the rules and regulations of the college, not the other way around.

But Dave, this program is interfearing with an academic class. Thats where I have the problem. If the marching band, an academic class, were not rehearsing then there is no problem here.

'Coming Soon to a Stadium Near You' :-D
'Kickin' Brass' :-D

'Bon Jovi'
Here's my feelings towards the shows.
Coming Soon to a Stadium Near You- Good music, great movies, and I think the audience will really like it.

Kickin' Brass- Personally, I'm scared. I'm a woodwind, so anything with brass in the title innately scares me. I'm not a huge big band or jazz person, so I tend to dislike shows which feature that music exclusively (although Latin jazz is fun). My hope is that the FMB will surprise me and do a show that makes me proud and that I will enjoy. See, I'm thinking positively here.

Rent- I loved the movie and the music is phenomenal. But for a marching show, it will be interesting. I know Rent was very popular with students this past year, although I'm not sure that the Rent crowd is the same as the football crowd. Depending on the arrangements and songs selected, this could be a really good show.

Bon Jovi- I think this show will be a hit. Bon Jovi is a group that our parents are familiar with, and current students also know their music, both new and old material. Bon Jovi has a lot of appeal. Their latest song, "Who Says You Can't Go Home", did very well this summer on both the pop and country charts (the latter being a duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles). I'm interested to see the songs that will be featured. I think "Livin' on a Prayer", "Shot Through the Heart", and "It's My Life" would be a great trio. I think this show will be fun.

Does anyone know if Ryan Nowlin is doing all the arrangements this year? I also heard a rumor that Jason Sivill is doing the drill for one of the shows. If so, which show? I think the Rent show would have a ton of potential if it is a Nowlin-Sivill special. Looks like it should be a fun and interesting season for the FMB.
We played "Livin' on a Prayer" a few years ago. Doubful it will reappear any time soon.

Aughhh, noooo! Oh, the Hu-Toh memories! The squiggle drill! The lack of tone balance! That one stupid 3/4 measure that EVERYONE ALWAYS MISSED!!! Aaack!

ETA- Erica, I guess we posted at the same time with the same thought. Mine was just a bit more, um, distraught.

That's interesting- I don't have negative memories from that show. But then, I've blocked out a lot of things from my 3rd year. What I DO remember is that everyone loved Livin' on a Prayer- the entire student section was singing along! That made the show so much fun to perform. I would guess that a show of all Bon Jovi songs will be a huge hit.

As for the other shows- we always seemed to do really well with big band/swing type shows. They were fun to play and well put together. So if that's what "Kicking Brass" ends up being, it should be good. But as a woodwind, I understand your concerns! I'm not sure how I feel about Rent- that one could go either way. I wish I could be there to see it!

Good luck this season! :)

So far we know Mr. Nowlin is arranging everything except for Kickin brass. We havn't heard much about where that music is coming from, however we did hear a few recording of the band at james madison playing some of the music and it was phenominal so I am very excited about that show.

Rent is a nowlin sivill special so prepare to be wowed I guess.

Don't get your hopes up to high but there might be a really exciting new addition to pregame this year if the Doc takes a couple of suggestions from me and a couple others.

It's "You Give Love a Bad Name"..."Have a Nice Day"...and "Livin' on a Prayer/It's My Life"...so I guess Livin' on a Prayer is making another debut, in addition to It's my life...should be a good show. I guess they played some of it in full band the other night, but I wasn't there due to STILL fitting nugeyes for uniforms. :(

Hey, I went and dropped by to watch the last 15 minutes of practice today. Looking and sounding pretty good for the first real practice! :D

(Although there were a few mellos or trumpets-- couldn't tell which from that distance-- who were definitely out of step. :P )

Those would have been the Mellos, we discovered a slightly illogical section of the drill at the end of the day that was throwing some confusion into that particular section; not that it takes much to confuse the mellos...

Careful, Niz. Your moderator was/is a mello. The best drum majors come from the mello section. Pat Pearson, Melinda Dolence, me.
