No no, he's a good guy, and I like him. He's hard to warm up to, though, which is why he tends to get a bad rep with some bandies. He does have a pretty sarcastic sense of humor, and doesn't try to soften the news when he tells you what you're doing wrong.... and he lets you know that there is always something to be improved. Those are the reasons I, and most everyone, used to be a bit dubious about him, I suppose. (Well, and because he's a trumpet player.Rightupinthere wrote:Okay, gives us the poop on Sivil.

Hey hey hey! Don't go knockin' on the trumpet players...we are indeed a special kind of breed...but we mean well! I was kind of intimidated by Sivill for the longest time last year...until closer to the end. When he was walking down the hall and looking at me strangely and I said, "Hey, stop looking at me funny." Yet he continued to do so. Then goes, "I wasn't looking at you funny...THIS is looking at you funny....
" It was a rather amusing moment. He doesn't bother me at all.

Leah, you are right. Trumpet players are a VERY special breed :coo-coo: (
)
And the others are also right...Sivill's sense of humor is quite sarcasitic and very dry. He tends to be rather blunt and very frank in telling you what he thinks. It does take a while to get used to his personality and warm up to him. All that being said, he is also one of the best educators (music or otherwise) that it has ever been my pleasure to work with/for. He knows when and how to push, and when and how to back off. And the best part is that he'll do both without you knowing that he's doing either one. I learned so much from him in his two years here, and I hope that in a few years when I get the chance to teach my own band, that I can apply those lessons.

I LOVE THIS GUY, Jason Sivill.... here is what he wrote to his students about Miami...(50th Band day Schedule, partial)
12:15 pm – Parade Begins (We play Fight Song/Scalp.....and March....a lot...)<-prolly mimicking MUMB, as I think they were right behind us....
1:45 pm – Miami University performs their pre-game show (We sit in the stands and cheer for them!)
2:00 pm – Game Begins
3:00 pm – Massed band performance “Music of Billy Joel” (know the music)
4:15 pm – Miami wins and the crowd goes wild! <---I LOVE IT!!!
4:30 ish – Post Game performance: Miami University Marching Band (We cheer....again)
After Post Game – THEN.....we go home.
And then
The MU music department is responsible for helping our band program in many ways. By attending, we are showing our support and enthusiasm for Miami University Bands. Therefore, it is critical that we stay for the entire event. Leaving early will not only earn members halfcredit for the event, but also communicates the wrong message. This event takes only one day, a minimum amount of preparation, and should be an enjoyable day. Plus, you get to boost your grade by attending and participating correctly. What a great deal!

I'm actually good that some of the sections seem to have less leadership. Maybe I'll upset some people with this next remark, but it's the truth. Last year we had too many people in leadership positions that just didn't add to the sections or actually help out IMO. So by getting rid of people who didn't do anything (lowering the amount of people in leadership roles), I think you guys will have much stronger sections who will all be more disciplined. In turn, I feel that should get all of the other problems like fundamentals and stuff worked out. The people in the leadership roles listed helped their sections out last year and of course I had the time to notice who was stepping up while on the sidelines. I wish you all the best and think everything will be better than this past year!! GO FMB!
"To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the project manager, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be."
Metzger...you actually raise some pretty good arguments, and I think that there are several people who should hear that. I'm not arguing why Doc Hayward and Co. chose the people they did, I'm just wondering why one of the biggest sections in the band only has one leadership spot whereas some of the smaller sections have 2 or 3. By the way, your not coming back next year are you?

Not that I'm debating your point-- but 20 members hardly makes you "one of the biggest sections" anymore... although you're right, some smaller than you in '04 got more leadership positions for '05.
What ratio of nugeyes to vets are you looking at for next year, do you think? That's where having only one leadership position could get tricky. But if there are enough vets compared to nugeyes, then I'd think the vets would be able to step up and be leaders for the nugeyes, in a sort of leadership-trickle-down effect. That may be what Doc H and company are after in making the decision they did regarding you guys.

Well, I didn't mean there'd be trouble with keeping discipline within the section, really. But there's a difference between discipline and dedication*, or even between discipline and effectiveness. No matter how in-charge Bernie might be, he's still only one person, and can't be everywhere at once. If several people have problems or questions at the same time, it seems like that's when the vets need to be leaders, too (which is perhaps what Doc H is trying to do with the maggots). And that's true for any section.
*I mean dedication within the section, not the leadership's dedication.
Edited: Changed the wording a bit for clarity.

That's basically what I was trying to get at, but just couldn't think of it, thanks flicc!! also, I would be wondering why we only have one even if it was someone other than Bernie...so yea...FliccGirl wrote:LOL!McMetz811 wrote:I think Bernie being the only one by himself won't matter to much.
