WHOA... that's a huge...
Bassdrummin,
I am intrigued by your comments of UMASS Marching Band. I know they march Corp style and that they have a huge Pit. But I never thought their marching was anything great. The band is huge and it takes a long time to get them into any formations. Plus they use singers and guitars in their show. That always bothered me.
I love the corps style of marching but also love the Michigan/Ohio State style too (I have not seen the FMB yet but will do so this fall).
I tend to listen first, then notice the marching. My son was in the UConn marching band for three years. They could not march to save their lives but they sounded great.
A couple of PA state schools have very good marching bands that strive for perfection and entertainment...West Chester University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

speaking of state schools in pa, i wonder how the clarion u. band is shaping up. do they use weighted cords to chart drill? do they leave trugreen/chemlawn style flags on their spots on the field? how many times in a day do they hear, "that's whaddeye said!"?Forbes wrote: A couple of PA state schools have very good marching bands that strive for perfection and entertainment...West Chester University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Forbes,
You are right. I used UMASS as an example since the videos were mentioned earlier in the thread and everyone could see how good the drumline was musically. It showed that they worked hard to perfect their sound and that was the basis I used as a comparison of the two types of bands. When I talked about marching fundamentals, I really was not talking about UMASS anymore... most of that was directed towards how we can improve the FMB. The FMB is focused more on the entertainment side of things, but we lack the execution that is needed to take it to the next level. I believe we are on the right track, but the future is with the 200+ new members coming in. If we hammer the fundamentals into these kids and challenge them on a daily basis to do their very best, this band will be something else. Man, I really need to get off my soap box and get some work done.
jacojdm,
Dr. Toney may have had a different way of teaching the FMB... and we were not that great during his time here... but I tell you what, I miss that guy to death. Always could make you smile and had some of the best stories I've heard. "One, two, you know what to do."
word.

jeff, i couldn't agree more. dr. toney is one of the nicest and most pleasant people that i've met. i knew every day i'd hear from him, "mr. myer! (nevermind that's not exacty my last name). hey! How are ya?" and one of the highlights of my college and band library career...the time he asked dan crain and i to write percussion parts to saturday in the park and proceeding to vocalize the parts and expect us to transcribe them on the spot.Bassdrummin wrote: jacojdm,

and the time he and i were working on a-bad flip folders, and he says, "john, do you know what a hairy buffalo is?" and told me a great story about fsu.
what good fun.

You mean the MAC is unappreciated and underrated nationwide?!?!??!?!?!?!?
I never would have guessed such a thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it true that no MAC band has ever won it? I tried to check, but my internet is being a brat and keeps freezing when I try to get into the official site.

MiamiBando,
I did not say UMASS was not good. They just don't impress me much.
First, they are huge, over 300 I believe. It takes them a while to get to each formation.
Second, they bring out singers and guitar players. That is not my style.
It is interesting that bands from two D1-AA football schools (UMASS and James Madison) have won this award and no MAC Band has won it.
By the way the 2005 Sudler Award has been awarded to The Blue Band of Penn State University.

MiamiBando,
When we were visiting schools with our son we visited UConn first and were blown away with the campus (much, much improved since my wife graduated there in the early 80s). We also visited University of Rhode Island. That was a nice school.
We then visited UMass. The buildings were old and in disrepair. The student union looked like a fort. We went to the place where tours were supposed to be given and no one was there. We left as quickly as possible.
One of the cymbal players in those UMASS videos is from our high school. She went to UMASS sight unseen. I think it is better that way! She just wanted to be in that band. She also marched Crossmen. She ended up liking it at UMASS.

She's DCI... that explains it ALL. Though, almost half of Miami's band does DCI, or comes from championship BOA bands. (Centerville, etc.) Miami is supposedly hosting a BOA Regional this year. It'll be really nice, I'd like to see the FMB come down and perform, along with the MUMB.

Kelly, actually, saw the UMASS band at the USSBA Championship one year when she was competiting for our high school.
In the Mid-Atlantic area, where high school marching band compitition is huge, the three biggest organizations are TOB, USSBA and COB. A few of the bigger bands will compete in BOA, but only a couple of times.
Schools in this area are strongly affected by Drum Corp. USSBA is under the direction of YEA who runs both the Cadets and the Crossmen. Almost all of the bands competiting in these events are marching roll step with a percussion pit on the sideline.
My daughter will be a freshman this fall. I was disapointed that she was not marching until I saw that over 50 percussionists are coming into the FMB. She is not a natural drummer.

I don't think that was true last year. And, I think after having such a successful season last year...people will WANT to stay!Euphsrockmysocks wrote:I have to say...the band is going to be huge, after reading what everyone else has written.
