Dear current members of the FMB
If you have not yet done so, please head to the multimedia page on here and listen to Grant's recording of the Forward Falcons. Listen to the accuracy. Listen to the drive. There is a subtle but important difference to playing the notes and playing the music. There is another subtle difference in playing music and playing it with passion. Listen to the drive. Listen to the passion. For heaven's sake, listen to the accents!
I am not saying it isn't mostly there now, but when I listen to the more modern (2000-2005) recordings, and I don't hear the precision. I certainly don't hear the passion and drive I once did (blow through the entire phrase and exaggerate the accents, for crying out loud!). Hearing Forward Falcons should get your blood pumping, even on a rercording. Let us hear the best version of FF since 1991.

Re: Dear current members of the FMB
1989 was a bit better of FF upon reflection. Chief was a stickler about how EVERYTHING sounding with the marching band. We were to be musical first - and it showed.Falcon30 wrote:If you have not yet done so, please head to the multimedia page on here and listen to Grant's recording of the Forward Falcons. Fliccgirl: Enters thread, reads through. Notes standard-issue Card-Carrying Alumni Arrogance, the nuances of which she is only just beginning to learn the skills of participating in. Gets to third, fourth, and fifth posts, raises one eyebrow ever so slightly. (Are you picturing it? This is dramatic gold, here, people.) Considers commenting, but decides there is very little point.

I've got the '89 tape... not sure I want to take the effort to digitize it though.
One thing that bugs me... at least for the past few years... the mellophones in Forward Falcons!! (not sure who else has the part... maybe the alto saxes?)
We do these long eighth-note falls followed by some quarter-notes and then two little 16th note runs into half-notes (dotted-half ??) that DON'T carry over to the next run. There's a REST there!!!
It's "digga-digga-daaaaaa REST digga-digga-daaaaaa REST digga-digga-dunt" and then into the quarter notes...
(sorry, I don't have the music in front of me... but it was DRILLED into us my 2 years in band and I hate hearing it played otherwise -- I won't say wrong, because maybe that's how you're being taught to play it now -- but it's written as above)

I PROMISE there have been some of us BEGGING to get that back together. And looking at the music, it is NOT a rest (in our parts) but a tied note, which would need to be cut off according to the rules, so to speak. We tried and tried and tried.ZiggyZoomba wrote:I've got the '89 tape... not sure I want to take the effort to digitize it though.

Anyone else find it nerdy that I knew EXACTLY what part he was talking about?ZiggyZoomba wrote:I've got the '89 tape... not sure I want to take the effort to digitize it though.

If anyone has 88-92 'digitized' or on CD or even tapes, I'd LOVE to have copies. I will pay. I 'saved' my 91 and 92 tapes from the fire but the 92 ripped in my tape deck of the carI've got the '89 tape...
and I'm afraid my 91 will have the same demise.
but back to the topic... what was the topic of this thread?
Go Faccons!
