I know this is an "other school" topic, but since it's band related, thought it should go in the band forum. The BGHS band performed last night in the first Glass City Marching Band Festival at Roger's HS. It included many area bands along with the UT marching band. All in all, for a college band, I wasn't all that impressed. They were very loud and the sound was ok, but the marching left a lot to be desired. The program said they have 160 members, which is quite a bit LESS than the Bowling Green High School band (nearly 200). As my son put it...."They definitely weren't BGSU, more like a REALLY good HIGH SCHOOL band." ....of course, my judgement of them may have been a bit clouded, as I had one radio earbud in and was listening to the BG football game while they were on the field!!

No, your judgement is right on the money.

Your judgement would have been the same regardless of whether you were listening to the BG game or not!!

good high school band, maybe. decent college band, NO F'IN WAY!

The UT band is paid by the Athletic Dept and falls under their authority, I believe.

I believe they were held as an example of why BG DIDN'T want to become a "Paid to Play" organization. I'm not positive, however.

Knowing that UT doesn't have a strong music or education department, the band does fairly well with what they have. They don't really have as strong a tradition foundation as does the FMB.

Kidding, of course. You're right. And the quality of the band is almost certainly not the band members' fault anyway, but more the situation. My sister was in the UT marching band once upon a time (in 88 and 89) and loved it-- though she didn't like that they carried flip folders on the field. (I know, I know, the FMB used to as well. I'm just sayin'.) Were they under the athletic department's jurisdiction back then..... I have no idea.

What is behind the "paid to play" issue, exactly? Is the thought process that band members stop doing it for the love of it, and start thinking about what they can get out of it? (Sounds logical.) Or something entirely different?

it's kinda like ABand...some people are just in it because it's easy money.

That was me. The one and only year I did A-Band was because I figured that I was at most of the games anyway, I might as well get paid to do it.

Starting the 2003-04 season, the A-band members are getting paid due to a donation specified as such, I believe. The payment takes the form of a "scholarship" applied to their bursar accounts, for (I think) around $9 a game.

they wanted the "best players" so they started paying us to do it. otherwise hardly anyone would do it, i have a feeling.

my freshman year (2002-03) we didnt get paid and their was 3 bands. Top Flight, Talon and Bird of Prey. And if I can remember right they were all a decent size. There was 3 the first year we paid but the third one was a "jazz" band sort of thing and quit small. But I think if we didnt get paid people would still go out for it. I'm going on my 5th year of a-band and i'd do it no matter what.
