Game thoughts.......

Post by Rightupinthere »

I need a study break from writing two papers for Business Law class. I've about had all the wordsmithing I can handle. I need something casual.

1. Great to meet Niz, Presbg, FMBfan07 (cowbell rocks, dude!).

2. I got to hug fliccgirl. Not surprisingly, it was much better than the fantasies. :-D (That scream you all just heard was Emily running to remove her skin with a belt sander.)

3. I never really paid attention to the cymbols during the cadences. I was standing next to presbg and let me tell you, they were tight. Not just that, they were musical as well. It was like I was back in perc class learning how to make the different sounds with the cymbol. I had a lot of fun watching those folks.

4. On a related note, the percs were tight once again. The snare sticking was a bit loosey goosey at times but I believe it was just because it was after playing for the Bataan Death March! It was still tight. I also LOVE the new drums. I believe that's a faux walnut finish? It's looks very good.

5. Another related perc note, don't attempt one-liners with the percs early in the morning. They just kinda stare at you; then eachother.

6. MAN! That was a long damn march! That's all I'll say.

7. The rank and file sax players are rather quiet. Not in a bad way, just VERY different from when I was in band.

8. The alumni numbers were thin this year but I firmly believe the timing of the information was the sole reason for that. Even with the thin numbers, the Alma Mater sounded very, very good.

9. Halftime was awesome. Musical. Warm. Balanced. The marching was excellent with even the fundies for rear-hace marching better than even we did it. Poe Toint was also impressive. The mellos were a little shy on volume but they weren't in a really good range for that horn. The bones were a bit forced in spots - specifically when they had the melody, but when the chart called for warmth, they delivered beautifully.

10. The FMB is back to the way I remember it.

11. I don't know who they were, but the alumni percs were cracking me up. They were teaching my daughter how to say, "rip his head off!" Classic!

. I was tired from my late flight on Friday, but I had to be there. I hope the rank and file realize how much of a thrill and honor it is to come back to BGSU for homecoming and once again take the field with the regular band. The FMB is so much of who I am as a person. I appreciate the warmth extended to me and my family during my visit and it extended to more than just the marching band folks. All the students were very pleasant and a lot of fun to be around.

Here are some images from the game. Please know that my wife put in the captions. I wish I would have gotten pictures of halftime for y'all, but I was too into the show to care.

What a show. What a weekend.

Er, well, not until you just said that...... now all of a sudden I'm feeling kind of creeped out.

Um, yes. My legs still haven't forgiven me. And everyone around here just looks at me funny when I grumble that my legs hurt from marching, so I don't even have anyone to complain to!

I'll agree with this. The marching was good, but the music in particular completely blew me away. Very crisp and defined sound, but without sacrificing musical quality. I was definitely impressed.

Awesome job, FMB!! :D

Ruit, It was a pleasure meeting you as well. I'm glad you enjoyed Steeven's cowbell performance. He is literally the reason I put that little number together. Steven, thank you for putting my work to good use. As always you came through in your perfectly unique style and brought smiles to all our faces once again. Side note: the only problem was that some of it was so funny that about half the section couldn't play the last three bars of the song. Definately worth it in my opinion though.

Nice seeing the alums again! It's always great to have them with us!

I'm very sorry to hear, brother.

My grandfather meant the world to me so understand how that goes.

Speaking of Euphs, do you all know why you wear orange socks? It started during my time.

I just wondered if you knew the origins of that tradition.

We actually havn't done it for quite some time. But there was a thread on here a while back where someone mentioned that the euphs all showed up in orange socks for some reason and I thought that was pretty cool. So I went out and got orange socks for the whole section. If you could shed a little more light on it that would be great.

I'm going to attempt to be as accurate as humanly possible to the event which occurred.

Before white or black shoes, the band wore black shoes with white spats.

A couple of Euph players wore socks simply because it was part of school colors and there wasn't a rule regarding sock color (since it really didn't show over the spat).

The folks were Carolyn, Carolyn, Ann, and a fourth whom I cannot remember. One Caroly was at the game on Saturday but didn't march. It appears as though Saturdays don't begin until 11am and rehearsal cut into her hangover recovery time. She was wearing orange socks, by the way.

Anyhoo, on one particular day, the sock showed up.......pretty well, I might add. The Euphs in question were brought up in front of Jay Jackson the asst dir at the time.
Since that meeting the Euphs always wore orange socks to band rehearsals (and to performances only covered up with black socks). In fact, some of the saxophone players began wearing the orange sock as a sign of solidarity.

Now you know the rest of the story.

I wish I had known that when I marched. I would have always worn orange socks. I think orange socks just became a permant part of my game day attire.

Euphs aren't the only ones that wear orange socks.
Until this year, there were several trombones and one flicc (yes that would be me) that wore orange knee socks on game days. Normal procedure including rolling up the pants legs so others can see the orange. This started a few years ago when a band-member-filled intramural wallyball team named the Orange Sox came into existence. They bought the socks for wallyball and carried them over into the marching band season.

Even though we're no longer in band, we still wear our orange socks with pride...not to mention the socks are great at keeping your legs warm!
