THANKS Grant!
boy... add "Lose 25 pounds" to my list of things to do for homecoming next year.... I look like an inflated pumpkin.
Do you realize that ALL THOSE TIMES I've done a backbend for the SSB NO ONE has every gotten a picture of me? I have NO IDEA how far back we've gone... I asked the BGSU photographer and HE didn't get one (friend of mine) and I asked Carol's husband and he got Mark but not me... elusive pictures...

Well NEXT year if this old woman can still bend, I'll let everyone know to take Mark and my picture!
I know Brad. He's my brother-in-law's best friend. We met at my sister's wedding. He is a good guy and takes great pictures!

Indeed he does. When I was photo editor at the paper last year I organized a thing where he came every other Friday and critiqued all our photos and tought us stuff so he's like my mentor in a way!!!Ohiogal wrote: I know Brad. Re: pictures
I can answer for them that yes they DID indeed do it when they were drum majors! It was pretty damn impressive. And I have no idea why the tradition ended. I can only assume that they were far superior in every way to all subsequent drum majors/field commanders.McMetz811 wrote:Uh oh, you're mace angle looks a little lower than Mark'sZiggyZoomba wrote: Anyhow...Bill Hayward just sent me this. http://www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com/gallery/ ... AchingBackJust kidding of course but I had a realistic question about all of this. Did you actually do this back when you were field commanders of the band or was this just an alumni thing? And if you actually did do it, why did it go away?

We were drum majors and not field commanders.
We did do that and back then she and I could really go down on the bone chord. *wow, does that sound dirty*. It was a little easier back then because we had the busby which was a wonderful counter weight.
I think the tradition ended because with the new assistant director, Delaine and I were pretty much left out in the cold in regards to training the new drum majors (Melinda Dolence and that other guy).
In retrospect, I should have marched one more year as drum major. I just didn't want to be a six year marcher. That and I had to earn money.

flattery....
BRING ON THE FLATTERY!
First: Thank you!
Second: the other drum majors didn't want to do the backbend or couldn't do it. Our mace usage (that we started, too) went away 'cause none of the others wanted to learn it I guess. Mark and I were sent to Smith Walbridge Drum Major Camp our first year (I don't know if any other drum majors were sent as Mark Kelly MADE us go). I ended up being an instructor there for two years after that (this one time, at band camp!.... ah, the stories....)
ahghem.... anyway since Mark and I were drum majors together for 4 years we didn't have any "assistants" to teach how to do things. So, I think that was a factor of the backbend and other things to go away... I did go to band fundamentals a few times to work with the new drum majors in 1993 but I couldn't force them to do anything. They also had a different band director so a lot of tradition was lost there... (Sparky tried to take some of our traditions away but we wouldn't let him).
In a round-about answer, in defense of the drum majors since, there wasn't anyone to tell them how to be BGSU drum majors... Mark and I continued the tradition of the Mark Kelly years. The others are what their directors and Dr. Moss wants them to be. Mark and I have both offered to come 'train' new drum majors but I guess our help wasn't wanted or appreciated.
*steps off soap box*
AND THANK YOU MR. HAYWARD FOR GETTING A PICTURE OF MY BACKBEND!!!!
