today at the women's bball game we played O Canada.
i was confused and kinda happy

after the game some nice older lady came up to me and asked why we played it. I said i was not to sure, but then she said she enjoyed it and it was beautiful

Well, I'd much rather hear that than the US' anthem. Theirs has a much smaller range, allowing more people to sing it well, as opposed to the SSB's octave and a half. Ugh. I've always thought that the national anthem (of any country) should be one that the average Joe can sing well, and the SSB fails miserably n that categorie.

During the Stanley Cup last year, I remember watching one of the games in Canada, and the entire stadium was standing up, BELTING the lyrics to this song. For God's sake, that was awesome. Here in the States, you'll come across thousands of people at games who mumble at best... because they can't sing the song. Ugh.

Amazingly enough, there were a lot of students singing along with O canada and none singing along with the SSB before the game. Side note, the kid who sang the SSB last night was terrible.

Personally, if someone else is singing the SSB, I think it's rude to sing with them. If the band were playing, that's different, but someone was given the honor of singing it. If we wanted to hear the crowd sing it, we wouldn't have guest singers do it.

Niz, id love to see you sing that by yourself and do perfectly. He wasnt great, no, but ive heard much worse this year. He did a damn fine job. That is probably nerve wracking as hell.

I really can't stand listening to 95% of "guest" singers of the SSB. Often times, the quality of singer is questionable, as is there interperetation of the song. When there's no accompaniment, director, or metronome, so many people find this to be an invitation for uncouth embelishment. In addition, all of this embelishing makes it even harder to sing along with.

That's probably one of the most unpatriotic things I've heard in a long time.

I'm sorry - this is my nation and I am going to sing the National Anthem regardless of who is performing it.

1. Add ornaments
2. Change Keys in the middle to compensate for lack of range
3. Change Octaves to compensate for range on rockets red glare
4. Call it the national anthem, every country has a national anthem, its the Star Spangled Banner

Those are my two biggest pet peeves about people performing The Banner. Talk to anyone who has ever been with earshot of me after such a performance. You can make a decent argument for the ballad, but it's certainly not a slow, sappy, love song type ballad.

For those who do perform the SSB, I have to give them credit. It is an extremely difficult song to sing, and even harder to sing and sound good. I was lucky enough to be the resident SSB performer for a local swim team last season, and there where two things that saved me week in and week out: a) a good understanding of song's background and history and b) 75% of the people in this area are tone deaf and think American Idol is the best thing ever musically.

I feel myself getting worked up, and ready to write a book on this, so I'll stop now and save everyone one.

The kid Wednesday night sang it like a dirge. LONG and SLOW as can be. He also decorated the whole thing, and somehow forgot to resolve on the last note of 'star spangled banner yet WA-VE'. It takes guts to sing it, but I've done it before and am now compelled to do it again.
