Non-FMB Band Camp

So yeah, today was my first day of running a HS band camp, and it went quite well. Much better than expected to be honest. Its a much different position to be RUNNING a band camp, as opposed to participating in it, or working as a "Sectional" help kind of guy.
Ya know what the awesome part it? The guy I work with got his Masters from BG, and played in Tuba/Euph ensemble with me back in 00-01. It was COMPLETELY random, but its awesome that in the middle of Kansas (well, not really the middle), we have a pair of BG people running a band together. Go us.

The director of bands at Wamego High School (about a 45 minutes drive from you) is a cat by the name of Chris Richmond. One of the best, from all reports. He and I were classmates and Phi Mu Alpha brothers. He graduated from BG in 1991 and got his masters at KState in 1996.
Look him up. He's a good guy - and freaking brilliant.

RUIT, that's quite excellent news. That "ups" my number of BG people in the area that I know of to Seven, spread from Lawrence-Manhattan. It still upsets me that there's no Kansas City Alumni Association chapter. I guess I could/should just start it, but its way easier to just bitch about it and wait for someone else to start it... Give it time. I'll start it.

John, that would be one Mr. Chad Hughes. He got his undergrad at Michigan, and did Masters stuff in Comp. at BG.

Oooooooooooh. I remember him. He's the guy that "re-arranged" Ay-Zig and wrote that piece that Dr. Toney wanted to replace "Happy Days" in pregame.

I believe that would be the "Flight of the Falcon." Give him credit, he can write and arrange like crazy. "Flight" was not one of his better efforts.

Make sure to brush up on your understanding of Miles Davis.
And ask him about "Tits, Beer, and Waffles" parties.

Ah, Flight of the Falcon. How I wish that I didn't remember that
Way to go Carlson! I'm positive that you are a fabulous band camp "runner"!

I think I remember that.... Well, I remember NOT playing Happy Days my first year or two, but I don't remember what we played instead. Someone remind me. It would have been 2002-2003ish.

I would love to help, but 2002 was the year I wasn't "good enough" to march pregame, so I don't remember what was played instead of happy days.
I do remember reading the flight of the falcon during fundamentals week, but I don't believe that we ever played it in pregame that year.

Well I've tried to block it from my memory, but from what little remains I seem to remember that Flight was very short lived. We didn't play Happy Days during pregame for at least a year, but I don't think that Flight was the replacement for it during that whole time- I believe we played Ay Zig instead?
I do remember the scripts "Falcons" we did during that time (instead of a "BG", "BGSU" or falcon head), including a maggot "dotting" the L.

If I recall, my freshman year we did the lower case bgsu, no?
I miss marching band.

IIRC, in 2001 and 2002 we played Ay Zig instead of Happy Days. In 2003, Doc H's first year, we switched back to Happy Days. In 2004, in honor of the band's 80th birthday, we added an extra set to Pre-game, allowing us to play both Ay Zig, and Happy Days. Flight of the Falcon was a song that we tried during Convo and Campus Picnic, as well one or two early halftime shows. While sound in concept, it never quite caught on. For the life of me, I can't figure out why
Of course, I could be wrong. It's happened before. Most likely will happen again. I don't think I'm wrong, but I'm open to the possibility.

Indeed we did.
