Looking for all those band people...

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY WHEN THERE IS ACTION ON THE FIELD.
let me repeat.
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY WHEN THERE IS ACTION ON THE FIELD.
I thought your own people made that clear to you last week. Yet your leaders decided that they were going to play with action on the field yet again. Whoever is leading the band needs to be removed, and maybe the band shouldn't be allowed to play at all. Per the NCAA's own website:
6. Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any
noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals (Rule 1-1-6).
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards [S7 and S27] from the succeeding
spot. Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be
disqualified [S47].

What is the rule for firing the cannon during a kickoff?
Perhaps our goal should be to lead the nation in 15 yard penalties this season.

I can go pull it out when I have more time, but no noise enhancing devices may be used at any time when the teams are playing on the field. Only during timeouts, pregame, postgame, and half time may there be any artificial noise per mechanical device or the band.
I may look for the MAC website rule book.

Just a side note, the rule you quoted does not say they are not allowed to play when there is action on the field.
Should they? no.
IN basketball, the rule is clear. In football, it is not.
EMU's athletic site has the MAC handbook up there, look it up.
If you have a complaint, please email it to the band director.

Actually I'll complain to Greg Christopher who actually will do something about it.

From the MAC handbook - I stand corrected. I was well aware of the NCAA rule. There is nothing about noisemakers in the football section, only the basketball section.
6. Bands/Cheerleaders
(cut)
c. Bands are prohibited from playing from the time the offensive team breaks from the huddle until the
completion of that play.
===
By the way - bitching about it on the internet in no way means that "I thought your own people made that clear to you last week. Yet your leaders decided that they were going to play with action on the field yet again. Whoever is leading the band needs to be removed, and maybe the band shouldn't be allowed to play at all. "

Per the MAC rule book...
c. Bands are prohibited from playing from the time the offensive team breaks from the huddle until the completion of that play.
I would further surmise that with the advent of the No Huddle Offense, that once a team approaches the line of scrimmage, the band needs to stop playing.

The band people last week said, it "Only happened once or twice. It won't happen again. etc. etc."

Well, they said it on the internet, so it must be true.

In all seriousness...Believe me, if you e-mail Dr. Hayward about the rule and giver her a link to it she'll gladly take it up on the drum majors(who honestly don't know much about football in my opinion...).

By that definition, artificial noise makers, shouldn't ThunderStix be outlawed then?
And if not, why haven't we seen ThunderStix at basketball games? Can you imagine how insanely loud Anderson Arena would be with them?

Many years ago at a Canton Mckinley basketball game their fans banged small blocks together. That was the loudest sporting environment I have ever been apart of.

I am not clear on the rule but it is definately something that has bothered me before too. There have been times when our team is trying to get plays in and the band is playing. Sheehan has even motioned for them to be quiet before and have heard several players complain that the band needs to stop playing when we are on offense and trying to get plays in.
