Jim Rome disses marching band

Post by jlozer8 »

Just finished watching "Jim Rome is Burning" on ESPN today. I used to like Jim Rome and his tendency to be brutally honest, but now I kinda just want to punch him in the face!

Here is an article, which I think he pretty much read word for word on the show.

Doesn't know what he's talking about. Just like the rest of his show.

I don't know why everyone is upset about this, it's true. Sorry, but maybe 30% of the FMB could do line sprints from the goal line to the 50. The rest wouldn't even make it past the 25. I've heard people say fundamentals week is worse than 2 or 3-a-days before and it cracks me up. I remember when Dr. Toney had us run a lap or 2 before band practices to get us warmed up. That lasted about a week as hardly anyone could do it. The only conditioning the FMB really does is chair-stepping, and I don't think it's actually done enough to condition anyone for anything.

DCI is another story...those kids have a valid argument. But college marching bands are no where close to college athletes.

I'm not trying to say that anything I did in the FMB was the same, or even close, as any varsity sport. I agree that the study he's citing (havn't read the study) is stretching a little. However, to compare the hundreds of hours that goes into that 8 minute show to a board game is a tad ridiculous.

In high school, the band beat the chit out of the football team in football.

We were used to hitting without pads; those pussies weren't. We lost our drum major to a broken collar bone, however.

Jim Rome couldn't even do entry without needing oxygen. Besides, the guy is to the English language what the Atomic bomb was to Japanese architecture.

Facts are facts.

That's my point. I marched DCI for two years... he doesn't know what he's talking about. When you are told to do 400 push-ups after a half-mile drill or run 50 laps after a ten minute show... I think that is on level with a div 1 sports program.

The study that Rome is referencing is discussing drum corps and top-level competitive marching bands.... for anyone who doubts the athletic prowess required to march a Div 1 drum corps, here is a little video of Phantom Regiment doing some basics work...

Not that anyone on this board really needs convincing :)

Really? You're right. I'd love to spend my day with A-Holes like you. Yeah, that sounds like fun.
