Wasn't a bad idea, but tech difficulties (bad mikes) and the band becoming "secondary" kind of spoiled it for me as I enjoy listening ...and watching them. Would also think it might have turned off the students, but the deal with them being able to text their votes seemed to catch on pretty well. 
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
