Didn't get the job - Still happy!!!

Well, I did not get the North Olmsted HS Band job. I am bittersweet for a couple of reasons: I thought I always wanted that job and I thought I had the perfect experience for it.

Over the past 2 months, I realized that I didn't want everything that came with the job. I wanted to have the title and do the band, but I was unsure about the workload which included a TON of extra stuff. It is too much work, too much pressure, and with having a young family, I don't need it. When I was in the interview, I kept thinking that I knew the tradition of the band was important, but what I really loved was competition marching band. I felt like I was lying in the interview talking about how I wanted to preserve the NOHS style. I love it, but it isn't me. I kept imagining ways to make NOHS a competition band and still be old school...I was not right for that job.

So, maybe that helps me narrow my focus a bit and go for competition gigs.

The awesome thing is that the person who did get the job is extremely well-qualified (he was the assistant dir. at Kent State Last Year), a BGSU alum, an excellent educator and my second cousin:!: Ben McMurtrie. (He is my Dad's Cousin's son). I couldn't think of a better person for the job. Congrats to my Alma Mater - good hire!

Sorry to hear, but its good to be true to yourself. Good luck in the future with other interviews. I get to start all of that fun about a year from now. Jeff

I'm sorry that you didn't get the job. I'm sure you are more than qualified, but just got beat out by a better canidate. It is good that after all of this you can still smile. Good luck to, and your bands, in the future.

Thanks for the website BTW. I think I'm going to be looking at it too, since I'm not totally sure that I want to teach in Ohio.

I can assure you, I DO NOT want to teach in this state. If anywhere, I'd like to go to Cleveland, or maybe Cinci, but I'd prefer to get out of here. Jeff

Aww, boo. I'm glad you are pleased with who they choose though. Maybe I'll have to go back for a game now, haha.

I am anxious to talk to him and see what his vision is for the band...

I personally feel like climbing on something tall and shouting "I love marching band competition, and that's OK." I kept trying to convince myself I wanted that job. I loved the school, didn't like the situation and job.

I don't think I'd ever work there either, and that's ok.

Sorry to hear, brother. You have the right attitude about it. I won't give you the crud about how when a door closes, a window opens or "there's a plan for everything."

I don't buy that stuff. You'll find your perfect fit someplace and be very happy. You're a good guy and a good teacher. If you weren't so flippin' short, you would be just about perfect.*

*You didn't think I was going to continue to blow sunshine up your pucker, did you?

I knew you couldn't let a good thing go. Just because you bump your head on ceiling fans...I know you are jealous.

I have three other possibilities...we shall see.

As a current pseudo-resident of FL, you dont wanna be here. I'll tell you right now that for some people, there is no hope.

Though for most people here, it's all about the marching band. That much is true. I'd probably want to teach on a college level rather than the HS level. There's seriously something wrong with this entire state. Not to mention though, that it's hot. HOT. The other day, I woke up and checked the weather channel, only to everyones demise that the humidity was 96% with 80 degree weather. TRUST ME, you dont want to even be in your car (I have no A/C in my car btw), much less be outside marching around. It's the kind of heat that will melt your flesh, given enough exposure.

But for anyone who wants to move here, just PM me. Heh, i'll talk you out of it.
