TRADITIONS ...?

Post by mikeyb3d »

What ever happened to traditions? Seriously, everything that made marching unique to other bands were the bonds and things that we did, that held us together and made us stand out.

Example:
Quigleys. Now, I dont know the whole story behind it (Maggots can tell us what they can), but it's fun to see those people who are late and whatever, step it up on game day and take a little abuse. If I'm not mistaken, I did one - and I dont remember griping or whining about it. Now, they call it "hazing", which is complete bollocks. I just dont get why we have to cater to these people!

Buffo: 'nuff said. Though I was in band the year after they put them to rest. But after hearing stories and then meeting a few of them, I was highly disappointed in the Dir. of Bands. He feels threatened and everyone must bow to the weaselness.:x

Speak out about it all.

Are there any other traditions that anyone remembers? - especially ones that we dont do anymore...

... AND WHY CANT WE BRING 'EM BACK?

Alas, the new band members will have to create their own traditions as no one is left to teach them traditions of the past... UNLESS we can get Novak there!!

And that will probably never happen.

Quiglies was never hazing. We made Sparky do a Quigley in a field under 'bout 4 inches of rain water.
He WAS wearing white pants.

Sparky, what a cork sucker.

if i am right quigleys were not done away with b/c of hazing, but b/c good band time can not be waisted on such things. but there are still some good traditions being done, by the maggots at least. which brings up another thing they were talking about taking away last year. some people feel that tubas should not be called "maggots". don't know how far they were going to take this talk, but i don't think it will happen, or hope not.

Is there no stop to the madness?! Who's running the freaking band program? OPRAH?

Quigleys are a rite of passage. To this day I am always early to appointments...quigleys burned a deep, dark lesson in my soul.

Do they still moo in the moo hole when getting uniforms? Does anyone go towering the night before a game anymore?

That along with other uniform traditions has not gone away thanfully! I believe the maggots still go towering nights before the game but then again, I'm not a maggot (thank God!), so I can't be positive on that :D

WHAT! No more mooing in the moo hole! Do you still kiss the head? Why is the Falcon Marching Band being "Whippled" to death. By the way, "Whippleing" is the stripping of anything that is tradition or unique to BGSU. And I will let you guess who it is named after. Clever, you don't get to guess.

Do'oh! My bad. But my comment still stands on the "Whippleing of BGSU."
And, this is my 500th post and I am now a Peregrine :D

My God, I forgot about the mooing. I only had to do that once - first year marching. I never had to 'fit' my uniform after that.

Haven't forgotten about the towering, however. *hic*

Do y'all still sing happy birthday to those individuals who did a little too much celebrating the night before? That was a wonderful tradition. The cymbol players really got into it on some mornings.....especially was a certain perc squad leader was still "down by the head" one Saturday morning.

Towering?

Post by mikeyb3d »

So, what's towering?

Yes, there's still happy birthdays sung. But I dont think that they do it to the hungoveries... It's done for ACTUAL birthdays - heh.:D

'Bout the only thing I remember doing the night before games was things like section vs. section bowling, which ended up kinda being either a night of fierce competition, or drunkenness.

Having said that:
I remember a morning rehearsal where Jonny B, Volpe, and myself were all chillin' on the field after a mild pregame fix. All of a sudden, JonnyB takes off for the fieldhouse, with a mouthful of vomit. I think that he was drinking until about 3 hours before morning rehearsal.

I'm happy that this is sparking some discussions - because the whippling is BULLSH1T.

Quigleys are still done.... but on an individual/small group basis, AFTER band, for anyone the maggots can blackmail. I left my jacket on the field this year, and MY OWN LITTLE made me chairstep down the field with a sousaphone on.

But it's not a whole-band event, where the miserable unfortunates get jeers and snowballs (Nov '02, anyone?) thrown at them.

And there are plenty of game-day traditions left. If EVERY tradition stuck around forever, there would be no room for new ones, ever.
