... number of incoming freshman
i've been helping out Queen B in the band office getting stuff ready for fundies... and i about died when i saw the numbers of incoming freshman... here's one for you to chew on:
--
196 Nugeyes
120 Veterans
--
Do we even have 300 uniforms!?!?!? LOL
Keep in mind this is just the letters of intent... the numbers will go down after day 1 when people decide not to come or to give up... but still... the numbers are huge
If anyone wants instrument breakdowns i'll post them... but for now... enjoy that tasty tidbit

WOW! I thought Miami's Frosh class was huge, at around 140! But 196?! That's more than half the band, I'd venture! Gonna be hard to control. Good luck!

Those are great numbers to have. But I have to wonder why there aren't more vets returning? I think another year around 250 total with a pre-game block of 225 would be a good thing. It will allow the new members to gain experience and develop a strong group of vets for next season.

That a hell of a battery.... people certainly won't miss you... heck, they'll hear you MILES away!
One day during a run through on the FMB practice field...
(Percussion cadencing)
meanwhile miles away
(BANG BANG BANG!)
(chickens start to scatter, and all hell begins to break loose.)
Woman: What the HELL is that?!
Man:It's just the FMB practicing again.
Woman:Oh. Can't they be a bit quieter?

Oh, that already happens whenever the percussion practice.
But on the serious side, if 50 or so of the nugeyes are percussion, they won't all end up in the band. Generously, they'll keep 10 or so nugeyes, which means that we can subract about 40 from the total number of nugeyes. Still quite a hefty number, but closer to even with the number of vets- whew!!

MAKE CUTS! AND ALTERNATES. SERIOUSLY.
And no, we are at least 25 uniforms short of that 300 estimate, but I hope to NEVER see us that big.

In addition to uniform concerns, there's also the issue of school-owned wind instruments. Almost of them (TSax, Mellos, Baritones, and Sousas) are in some sort of disrepair as it is, and then there are simply not enough to cover all of these new guys. Oy. If anyone out there has an extra $100K, please let Dr. Hayward know, I'm sure they've got a home for it. Ayt, Toledo Sucks

Ouch..... I hate the pit too.

But it's so fun to make fun of them, besides if Miami didn't have a pit to bash, we'd have to rip the saxs!

I love the pit in high school marching band, but it has no place in college. But that's my opinion. And I don't care if we put 400 on the field, as long as they are a good 400. It is to bad the band cannot get a deal wtih an instrument company like the percussion deal. I can't wait to see you guys at homecomming

1989 and 1990 had a pit (just keyboards, really).

first, to jackie....at least people can hear and notice my section...
secondly, 53 perc nugeyes? awesome. too bad they'll get cut. we dont have 53 instruments. we have at max: 9 snares, 4 sets O tenors, 6 basses, and 8 sets O cymbals. 27 positions and 3 of them are already taken by leadership. so that leaves 24. we do have vets coming back that will more than likely make it back in with no problem. so that brings that number down again.
personally, if you dont cut it, you should be cut. i've been there before, it CAN happen. why we dont, i 'understand' but really i dont. as for alternates, it doesnt work well. from experience i know this....2 years ago we had 3 cymbal "alternates" for pregame but they marched every halftime show. they never were allowed to march pregame because we didnt feel they could hack it...and we were right! however, two of them returned last year, one came back to cymbals and kicked ass, and the other went to bass and didnt do too bad either.
Cuts? oh yeah, and i HOPE AND PRAY ON EVERYTHING HOLY that we get to use them. letting everyone in is great and all, but it definitely holds us back. Alternates? eh, i'm not completely for it, but not completely against it. if had to actually pick a side and go with it, i'd say yes....so long as there is like a challenge type thing so the alternate can try and win the spot for the next show or something.....great...now i'm thinking like that school from columbus
Tentative Numbers

Okay, so since the Perc thing caused some discussion here's some more numbers for you to chew on:
50 Flutes:
27 Nugeyes
13 Vets
38 Clarinets:
27 Nugeyes
11 Vets
41 Saxophones:
19 Nugeyes
22 Vets
**WE HAVE THE LARGEST NUMBER OF VETS THIS YEAR!!**
21 Mellophones:
10 Nugeyes
11 Vets
36 Trumpets:
25 Nugeyes
11 Vets
25 Trombones:
12 Nugeyes
13 Vets
24 Baritones:
12 Nugeyes
12 Vets
24 Maggots:
11 Nugeyes
12 Vets
67 Percs:
53 Nugeyes
14 Vets
.......................
but remember, a ton of kids won't show up... so these numbers are gonna drop... especially in the drumline side of things
i personally would laugh if we got all 41 saxes... there could never be enough sax sound... could you imagine being "zigged" by the section then... you'd truly go deaf
