Visiting this weekend...

Post by Forbes »

My wife, son and I are coming out for the weekend.

I can't wait to see and hear the band. What show will we see on Saturday?

My son is a veteran of the UConn marching band and basketball pep band (including a trip to New Orleans when the women won the National Championship). He is really interested in watching the band. UConn is more of a drum corps style marching band and he came from that background in high school.

Just watch for a bald, slightly paunchy, glasses wearing, middle aged man with a moustache. I am sure there won't be many of them at the game.

the FMB is putting out a "Hip Hop/Pop" show this weekend. From what we hear, there isn't much drill...but some dancing and some alright tunes, thanks to the arrangement of Jeff Heisler. I'm not particularly excited about the show, but maybe once we start putting it on the field, my opinion will change. :?

Augh... a bandie WOULD have to come THIS weekend for his first time seeing the FMB. :x (Both my older sisters and their five-year-olds are going to come this Saturday too for the first time.... one of my sisters was in the band at UT. Grrr.)

Not that this show is going to be terrible or anything. It's going to reflect what it is-- a one-week wonder. It'll be fun, and the crowd will probably like it, but there won't be much drill. It's by far our least impressive show of the year, simply because we only have five days in which to learn it.

Your son might be interested in the FMB's drastic switch in styles, from high-stepping and straight blocked lines in pre-game to low-stepping and curved forms at halftime.

FliccGirl,

As fans of Michigan Football both my son and I are aware of the high step and the glide step used. We are waiting to see BGSU's version.

Of course, we are coming mostly to see our daughter (and my son's sister...it just did not sound correct without adding this...LOL).

By the way, is there a fieldhouse show every home game? If so, when?

Wait, BG is a Michigan Immitator? I thought only the 110 claimed that one.... and their obnoxiously high step. Stooges. And numb skull who thinks it's cool to "Rear-Back" and "Drive-On" through the OTHER SCHOOLS Band deserves to be Ohio-esque.

That said, the FMB is pretty good musically. I've never seen them in person, but nothing can be as bad as Kent State and Akron's Marching band. They march even PREGAME with FLIP FOLDERS!!! Blasphemy!

I wouldn't call the FMB a UM immitator, but it is obvious that somewhere in our collective storied past that one was influenced by the other. The FMB's pregame is a take on the "Big Ten" Pregame (a very traditional style of marching band). For halftime, the band switches to something that allows for better musicianship, and more visually appealing drill (a contempary or corps style). Many bands do this. There are also many bands that march either entirely in a traditional style (OSU comes to mind) and bands that march entirely in a contempary style (can't think of any notable programs off hand).

Oh, and it doesn't take much to be better than the KSU Marching Flashes. About a month ago I went to a high school marching band festival in Defiance (which featured the band from Testicle Tech. They got showed up by several of the bands there) and every band there was much better than KSU. I'm fairly confident I could teach 35 monkeys to play and march and they'd be better than Kent.

Besides, it was before our time as FMB members, so I take no responsibility for that.
