Alright, I feel like there have been some comments, namely in the 'Traditions' forum that have led me to a point where I need to let people know what led to the pool incident.
Keep in mind I know that this is read by a lot of people!
Many of you know that my last year in marching band started with a lot of effort to be a supporter and not a downer for the band, which many of you know to have actually been the case. I had made strides with my practicing, my attitude, and my leadership. Many of you actually acknowledged this pubilically. Unfortunately there was a change in the second half of that season. What many of you dont know is why...
I had written an e-mail to Ms. Hayward about many problems I had, including one particular incident regarding practice in the rain, and a meeting that I had. It also included information about valuable freshman that were quiting, and reasons they were quiting in hopes that these problems could be dealt with. Although the email was harsh, it was also diplomatic. I did not contain personal attacks, rather issues that arise on the field and why I felt they were problematic. I was then referred to as a parasite, and asked to leave the band mid-season. All the arrangements had been made. I decided not to leave. I felt that jumping ship is not the way to go. For the remainder of the season, I kept my mouth shut and went through the motions.
Then came the motor city bowl...
Rather than tell this is story format I will list a series of things that happened:
-There was no truck crew so Murph and I loaded and unloaded the truck basically alone each time it needed down.
-When the truck got stuck in the middle of the field, I was on my hands and knees in the snow trying to get it out, before the perc section came to our aid, only to be reprimanded for being late to the bus.
-At the game, there was the situation with urination in bottles and it being drunk. Rather than dealing with the student who drank the fluid, the leadership was looking for the pee-er, and I confronted them on this.
-As we were loading the truck to leave the stadium, we told the directors that two ladders had been left in the stadium, the response was to leave them there, we had a schedule to keep.
-When we returned to the hotel, three of us took showers, and when that was done we went for dinner which was gone. When asked where the food was, the directors responded with, there was only so much, you should have been faster!
This was the point at which I felt that I had enough, so I decided to entertain myself, and everyone around.
The uniform was obsolete, nobody was hurt, and the situation went unnoticed by everyone for nearly a month.
When I jumped, I knew that it would be blown out of proportion, and that a huge deal would be made, but at that point, my respect for the directors had gone several months earlier. The way they handled many situations was obsurd, and whether or not I had been asked not to return, I was not coming back.
Much like Matrix, I feel that the attitude of superiority that radiates from the CMA doesnt work as a lader to lift the band to new heights, rather as a kick in the face.
My goal in clarifying this situation was not to get all of you on my side...because when it comes to it....I don't care....my goal was rather to shed some light on the poor handling of situations where new prospectives are presented. If, in life, we tried to eliminate opinions that we didnt like democracy wouldnt exist. Perhaps I was a parasite...but getting rid of me hasnt made the band better.
What caused me to jump...
