My first decade...

10 years ago today, I froze my hungover ass off in the middle of the Doyt, listening to some guy ramble on about the plight of the migrant worker.
Damn I wish I could go back and do that again. (The college part, not the migrant worker part. And not the college part of college...the other stuff.)

I worked that graduation....I froze my fingers off!!!

It was a good speech, but was too long for the weather. He did try to speed it up so we could get our frozen AZZ's out of there!! Now we do the graduations INSIDE, with separate ceremonies and with each student's name announced, unlike the mass, impersonal one you sat through!! Thanks for the memory....an unpleasant one, but DEFINITELY MEMORABLE!!!

Yep. Cold, rainy, crappy. And I really don't remember anything about the speech except that it bored the hell out of me, I was freezing, and I had already been given my "diploma", so I didn't really know if I wanted to be there. At least if they'd have read the names, I could have had an excuse to get up and move around a little...

Sounds like Baldemar Velasquez to me... was it? You don't remember... why did I even ask?

Yes that is who it was!! And TG was just hung over and cold, as it was a very good speech!! I may still have a copy of it around here somewhere if you want to read it!

I don't remember alot of it. Maybe it *was* very good... but to a college kid freezing his nuggets off, all I remember is "blah, blah, migrants need jobs, blah, blah, give migrants jobs, blah, blah..." and at that point, I think we just started making jokes amongst ourselves. That was the best part of the "mass conferral"... no seat assignments. So instead of sitting in alphabetical order next to people you don't know/couldn't stand... you got to sit with friends.

I graduated in May 1991 - Willie Mays was the graduation speaker and his speech was maybe 10 minutes. Now the Alum of the Year was long winded. She must have said "And in conclusion" nine times (must have known it would get a rise out of us waiting to graduate).

Sounds like a seminar I was at for work a few months ago. This woman gets up and gives a PowerPoint presentation that's dragging on and on before saying "Finally, I want to share 10 things with you that will help, blah blah blah... Number one..."
And she pulled up the next slide of "#1", along with 10 bullet points that went along with it.

Great... I graduated in May of '90, so if I graduated before transfer, I really AM old. Thanks for making my Friday a little less bright.

Wait a great pair of speakers we had in 1987.
First, there was William F. Buckley, who sounded like he was talking with a mouthful of cotton. The only phrase I made out was "I became discombobulated ..." I couldn't stop laughing after that.
Mr. Rogers was there to receive an honorary degree. He wasn't scheduled to speak, but the crowd went wild and he stepped up to the podium and led us in a chorus of "Won't you be my neighbor?"
Poor Buckley. The crowd barely feigned interested in his ramblings. Meanwhile, the host of a kids TV show practically brought down the house.

I was in jump school at Fort Benning when a guy came into the barracks Sunday morning with a copy of the newpaper. There in all of his graduation splendor was Mark Emblidge holding a Mr. Rogers poster in one hand and a bottle of champagne in the other while singing "Won't You Be My Neighbor?". The AP picked up the picture and ran it. The guy woke me up just to show me that picture. My best memory of Fort Benning.
BTW Botox - that was the year I GRADUATED. I won't tell you the year I started (but yes, you are still old

)

You were at the same ceremony as the guy who was MY graduation speaker on Saturday. Wiley Blevins - not as bad as we had expected. He was amusing and kept my attention.
I
am kind of a nerd though.
