Beyond new journalism - every time I take a look at the BG News Online, I find something that makes me cringe.
Current poll question:"Why did you chose your major?"

So thats why those girls were around Nate all the time. Must be nice to be in "special" ed!
Note to BO: This comment followed about five minutes of me thinking of how this applied to my major and how bad I screwed it up that I never got any hookers.

You don't know how long
I thought about that comment and who he meant.

I'm sorry. I guess it was the absurdity of the statement that I found funny. I'm appologize if I caused any headaches (USGF) or heart attacks (AAF).

Best BG News headline ever:
Heroes plentiful win over Huskies Falcons
Seriously.

The best one that I saw in my tenure was after the Almar Lanes fire.
"Fire strikes, nothing spared"

Wow. That's a great headline. Awesome.
But, boy, are there ever clunkers sometimes.
We had a major Ohio city spelled "Arkon" once on the front page when I was there.
One of the best headlines in the history of journalism appeared in a college newspaper. In 1968, Harvard scored 16 points in the final 42 seconds to tie a Yale that had won 16 straight games Yale finished 8-0-1 that year, and the schools finished as co-Ivy League champions.
The Harvard Crimson headline: "Harvard beats Yale, 29-29."
Mistakes happen

Perfection is something to strive for and never attain in the world of newspapers. The BG News aside, the way they stretch editorial staffs these days, it is amazing a paper even comes out every morning. If the grammar is even marginally acceptable, consider it a bonus.
I think the worst gaff we ever had at my old paper was that the news side (I was in sports) misspelled the town's name in a 60pt headline on the front page. The reaming that took place the next day left scars that will never heal. I just thank god that I wasn't on that side of the room that night.

One of my favorites was the lead headline, in gigantic font that read (something like):
Contruction slows traffic on Thurstin
I'm used to errors by the editing staff of a publication though. My HS yearbook had three pages where they never changed the template text under the pictures and half of the wrestling team was blacked out of the team photo.

When I was at BG I was probably one of the biggest bashers of the BG News.
But after graduating and reading the drivel in the student papers at the two universities I've worked at since, I've really come to appreciate the quality of the BG News. And I say that in all seriousness.
