All kinds of construction projects set for BG

Bids will be opened Dec. 17 for the first phase of renovations for the Bowling Green State University Ice Arena.
Steve Krakoff, BGSU's associate vice president for capital planning, said Thursday that an estimated $4 million will be spent on a variety of operational and structural issues at the arena.

Krakoff told the Finance and Facilities Committee of the BGSU Board of Trustees that the ice plant, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, boilers, electrical, masonry and roof will get attention. Work is also planned on locker rooms and in the curling area. "We expect a good bid environment like we have had for our other projects," he said. This work is to start in March and be completed by late August.

Already contracted is replacement of a compressor, with the work scheduled for January. 'We have fast-tracked that project," he said. These costs are being covered by state capital money and proceeds from a bond issue that is helping to fund numerous projects.

Later phases of ice arena improvements will be at least partially covered by a $5 million capital campaign that is under way.
And in the spring, the parking lots east of Perry Stadium are going green. BGSU Chief Financial Officer Sherideen Stoll said the parking lots along Interstate 75 are in need of repair and present "questionable" long-term maintenance costs.
The plan is to turn Lot 6 overflow into green space that uses grasses that can support seasonal and occasional traffic needs and offer other multipurpose uses. Existing concrete curbs will be demolished. The basic lot layout and lighting will be retained but landscape trees and improved drainage will be installed, along with a manual irrigation system. Construction should begin in March and the green lots would be ready for the 2010 football season. Lots that were reconstructed this fall in the immediate area are not affected by this project. The estimated cost is $1,453,935 with funds coming from a bond issue.

Krafoff also provided additional details about the residence and dining hall upgrades that were announced last month and construction reports for the Stroh Center and Wolfe Center projects. The residence and dining hall projects are running on a tight schedule in order to be ready for a late August 2011 opening. "Virtually everything has to go right. There's a lot to do and a lot of staff time is being devoted to the projects," he said.

Demolition of Rodgers Quadrangle and two nearby fraternity houses will be completed in time for construction on that site to begin shortly after classes end in early May. Construction will also begin at the same time on the new residence hall planned for a commuter parking lot north of Offenhauer Towers.

After the academic year ends in May, demolition of a portion of the southwest wing of McDonald Quadrangle will begin. That will make way for a 10,000-square-foot dining hall northeast of the intersection of Ridge Street and Thurstin Avenue. When the new dining hall is in operation, the existing McDonald dining hall will be demolished.

Demolition of Rogers and the fraternity houses is estimated at $900,000, while the estimate at McDonald is $812,500.
Commons dining hall is also due for renovations. That project will require the police department to be relocated from the north portion of Commons.

Residence hall projects are being done on a public-private partnership, with the land on which structures sit being leased to the developers. Similar arrangements have been used at other state schools in Ohio.

Krakoff said the Stroh and Wolfe projects are on schedule, with most of the work being underground. "We should start to see some steel being erected at Stroh by late December or January." At Wolfe, work will concentrate on foundations and the eastern portion of the structure, to allow for installation of mechanical equipment. The rest of the structure will follow by spring.

A related project is construction of a chiller for air conditioning that will serve several buildings, including Wolfe.
Additional tunnel work is planned on campus this summer.

I bet we could save a lot of money on demo by making the freshman who get caught drinking in the dorms do it as their community service.
