Mel and his buddy Roger Wise did their thing during the Golden Age of Falcon Athletics when I was growing up.
Known by many as the "Bobbsey Twins" they went everywhere and saw a lot of the Falcon greats in action, bringing the action to the Falcon faithful via WFOB. The night of the BG-Loyola basketball game in 1963, you could hear about every 10th word they said over the noise of the crowd.
Even with the 'bought and paid for announcers' of today, Falcon athletics could not have had a more loyal crew in the booth. When Mel couldn't keep up with the action under the basket the standard phrase was 'batted up there, no good, batted up there, no good, . . . . "
