Between the emerald ash borer mess, construction of and on buildings, widening of roads and just plain old removal of some for whatever darn reason, there are just fewer and fewer trees all over campus. I was looking at some pictures the other day of BG and comparing several campus areas from 10-15 years ago to now and it just amazed me how many trees have been cleared away. I wish we’d get on board and starting putting the Green in Bowling Green with some more trees on campus. The town of BG is way ahead of the campus of BG when it comes to this - by far.

Yeah, I agree with you. One of the nice things to do when I was at the College of Music was to go outside and relax under a tree while doing some work. They cleared out a good portion of the trees around that building my senior year. It was very unfortunate and I know it was the same all over campus.

Agreed. I'd really like to know who exactly (what department or person) makes these decision as well. Whether we like it or not, one of the knocks on BGSU is the appearance of out campus. We don’t have hills, we don’t have any views, some of our buildings are, frankly, ugly, and we have very few trees overall on a campus this size. It seems like every time I return to campus (which is pretty often) we’ve removed more and more of them. Another thing I have noticed is with the construction areas the last two years as they have done extensive clearing of trees in a lot of these areas. Obviously, the ones in the exact spot are going to have to go to make room for actual construction, and others had to be removed where equipment needed to maneuver, but in those areas which you can actually see with these webcams, they removed mature trees that weren’t in the construction area or where any of the work or equipment ever was. It’s like they slapped up fencing well around the area and just wipe everything out inside it. I also keep hearing about all these landscaping projects to be done on campus but it seems like many of them are of these scrappy looking shrubs. With the high volume of trees removed, I just don’t understand why we don’t do a better job not only replacing them, but adding more of them in general. We recently made a concerted effort to recognize the century trees on our campus, and I was thrilled, as they are beautiful. But we’re never going to ever add any more of them continuously removing so many they way we have been. I just don’t understand it.musicman2343 wrote:Yeah, I agree with you. I do hope that when a certain area under construction is completed that they will plant some more trees around it. Right now, I am referencing around the Wolfe Center, Health Center, and MMAC. They don't have to be giant oak trees either - get some nice small trees that have color to them. Anything would be an improvement I think.
