Went to President Cartwright's farewell reception this afternoon. It was a nice ceremony and a lot of people showed up to bid her farewell. Today was proclaimed Dr. Carol A. Cartwright Day in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Wish I could have been there!! Hadn't heard anything about it. I will be FOREVER grateful for the fact that SHE saved the Falcon Hockey program!!!

I wouldn't say that she saved it. All of you who let her know how important it is to the University and the history of Athletics, actually saved it. I am just glad that she was smart enough to understand the repercussions it would have on the Athletic Department (and the political consequences for her) and to override the administrators who wanted to kill it.

Agree that the outpouring of support definitely got her attention, and the former players that she met with two summers ago convinced her how important this program was to all of us. But SHE is the one who listened to the masses and SHE is the one who authorized the money to add to the money from the state to launch the first phase of the renovations. Without her we wouldn't be looking at a MUCH brighter future for Falcon Hockey! So to me, SHE saved the program and for that I will be forever thankful!!

Saving the Falcon hockey program was one of her most popular decisions with students as well as alumni. She once faced off with many of the stars of the Falcon hockey glory years who were not happy about the rumored demise of their program. She listened to their concerns, and she challenged them to be part of the fund-raising solution. It was a pivotal meeting in helping her decide to keep the program alive.
Later, when the "Bring Back the Glory" fund-raising campaign was just beginning, the university quickly invested in rehabilitating the aging ice arena - one of countless campus buildings that had been suffering from years of neglect before her arrival.

Apparently the students don't feel the same way. Reading the comments at the bottom of that article are enlightening to say the least...

Hopefully now that she's gone the new president will step up and get some new leadership for the athletic department....I know Cartwright didn't hire GC, but allowing him to destroy the athletic department under her watch is just as bad. Time to make a change.....the community is tired of this regime.

The issue is that people who either completely agree or even somewhat agree with the article aren't going to bother to comment on it, but people that are vehemently opposed to her actions and opinions will most definitely take the time to comment. If you want to see how people truly feel, a stronger gauge would not be to read the comments, but to look at the percentage of people that chose to comment after reading the article. I'm not saying it would be accurate, but it might be a better rating.

Personally, I feel she was a step-up from Ribeau. Ribeau let the University sit in an idle position, and his main goal was to diversify the campus. Cartwright chose to upgrade campus, by supporting the construction of two new dining halls, two new residence halls, the Stroh Center, and the Wolfe Center for the Arts. One commenter on the article mentioned that no new building would be instructional space. Is the Wolfe Center going to be an office building?

But, she did have her faults, as any President has. The most polarizing President in BGSU history was MacDonald. I would place Cartwright somewhere in the middle. I feel the CUE initiative is a joke and should be completely trashed, and many meetings occurred behind closed doors. Graduate students, many of which were employees, saw their voice going unheard, and actions were being taken against assistantship packages and academic programs with no notice to any affected students. Although I understand the need for periodic program review, the fact that the review had not taken place in such a long time made program closures an unanticipated result.

Overall, I feel she was effective. When is the last time we had a president, even of the United States, that everybody actually liked? When difficult decisions need to be made, they will usually infuriate somebody. That's just how administration works.

Wow, hadn't read those. Can't speak to most of the things they mentioned. My only experience is with the hockey program and what all happened with it. Most do not know the inner details of what happened and how it all went down. They are only speculating based on partial information and rumors, which is typical. It's all past history now and I'm just happy the program is on the right track again.

Yeah, I read most of those comments with a grain of salt. They're just students who are probably ticked that tuition is going up $168 and that they have to pay $67 a semester for the Stroh Center as well. I did agree with the article that she was very visible on campus and I saw her quite often in the 2.5 years I was a student while she was president and even the semester after I graduated. I remember seeing Ribeau but not nearly as much.
