Well I didn't know this, which isn't surprising in and of itself. I'm sure others may not be aware as well. So for the good of trivia enthusists everywhere....well at BG at least, here goes.
Dr. James Beckett founded the company as Beckett Publications in 1984. Prior to starting Beckett in 1984, he served as an Associate Professor of Statistics at Bowling Green State University. In the mid-1970s, while a professor at Bowling Green State University, he published his first baseball card price guides as “free-upon-request” pamphlets to, in his words, “bring order out of the chaos that existed” in the baseball card industry. These pamphlets led to annually published price guides and were the forerunners of Beckett’s monthly collectibles magazines.

That's interesting! Makes me wonder how he got the numbers for that first one. Did he just make them up or is there some formula they use to figure those out? If not, card collectors live and die by numerical assumptions...

Wow. My brothers, cousins and I used to worship those magazines. I think I heard something about that before but never saw official word. Good digging!

I like reading old threads as much as the next guy but at the risk of sounding like Germain(e) could you please add something of substance to an old thread when you revive one.

Huh, now you know, AND I feel that we should throw out the death penalty.

I know you're trying to be cute and add something of substance, but do you really think this? I'm curious how you came to this position, since I would venture to say that the majority of your political party are for the death penalty.

Do you even listen to anyone. I believe you just had a discussion with someone in another thread that said 90% of us think that 90% of your posts are worthless. Just because you had some random opion doesn't add value. You have said that you don't want to piss people off and that you would try to add something to this forum. Occasionaly you do. But simply, your not funny and you shouldn't try to be because you will fail at it. Don't try to put 15 posts on here a day. Stick to adding stuff that you really know and that you can back up, Unlike this morning in which you tried to use a qoute that had no context. If you come to BG, seriously consider taking the critical thinking courses. I think this must be lacking in your education.
That being said, please back up your argument for the dealth penalty, I am curious . Seeing as I typically consider myself republican I would like to know what you think. I have been needing a reason to jump ship lately and go dem.

Well I'm Christian and I feel we as humans don't have the right to put people to death. That being said we should instead invoke a lifetime of prison instead; sometimes it is neccesseary to kill: in defense, in combat, etc. But given the choice I'd choose prison over death for a criminal any day of the week.

wait till you start paying taxes and see how you feel about keeping some of these wastes of life in prison for life on your dime.

You support a president who has sent a country to war that has resulted in many hundreds of civilian deaths, but think it is immoral to put to death someone who made a conscious decision to end one or more peoples lives.

Alright, now you've sparked my curiosity. The viewpoint you've laid out is a democratic staple more times than not. Since you've laid this viewpoint out so clearly, I'd like to hear which views you have that make you consider yourself a Republican. I'm asking largely because your viewpoint on the death penalty is in juxtaposition to the majority Republican party. Obviously this is not the only platform to consider when one aligns themselves with a political party. Personally my views are more closely linked to the Democratic party, but I try to maintain an air of independence when considering the issues. Just curious what's gotten you to commit to one party over another at such a young age.

Well I'll be honest with you-I was influenced by my parents. They've always been part of the GOP. During the years I did try and learn about each party (I was big into politics for a while from age 10-14) but I always supported the Republican party; maybe it's 'casue of my parents' influence i dunno.
Also as far as the death penalty goes....I believe that we don't have the right to decide somebody's fate. But in times of war or defense you have to protect yourself, family, and country-then you must kill. It's a sensitive subject that's been haunting Americans for years. Maybe we should start a new thread for this topic, I'd love to hear what everybody thinks.

Yes, and saying this as a mild supporter of the president, The Iraq war did not appear to be justified by imminent threat. And the failure of the US to put down any insurgency has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians. To say it is ok to kill someone in war or even in defense doesnt justify your decision. the Situation may neccesitate that, but it does not give it justification. We decide peoples fates all the time, and in comminting a murder, that decission has already been made by the guilty. Why should we, bare the burden to support someone who has decided they are above society. if you feel badly for their "soul" give em 24 hrs to repent. For even if you kill 100 people, repenting and belief in christ shall save your soul from eternal damnation.
Do you also feel that removing a feeding tube and life support from someone is wrong. That is deciding their fate? but isn't putting them on that life support and feeding tube also making a decision for them. For with out they would die, why do we have to right to keep people alive but not to let them die or put them to death.
