Authorities charge BGSU student with menacing

BOWLING GREEN - A criminal charge was filed yesterday against a Bowling Green State University senior who had a shotgun in his dorm room.
An arrest warrant was issued for Brent Arnold, 22, of Paducah, Ky., charging him with aggravated menacing.

James Wiegand, police chief at Bowling Green State University, said Mr. Arnold was in treatment and was not in custody as of last night.

Chief Wiegand said Mr. Arnold and a friend went to the police department Saturday afternoon and told officers he was thinking of harming himself and had a weapon in his single room in Anderson Hall. The student accompanied officers to his room and turned over a shotgun and ammunition, Chief Wiegand said.

"We then worked with internal and external sources to get him some treatment," the chief said, adding that he did not know why the student was despondent.

Officers subsequently learned of an "alleged hit list" that named five students who Mr. Arnold may have wanted to harm, but Chief Wiegand said police did not find the list. Officers were given a photograph of the list, he said.

Hit List targeting BGSU Students - Arrest Warrant Issued

(Bowling Green, OH) - Bowling Green State University police have uncovered a possible plot to kill or harm students, complete with a hit list, shotgun and ammo.

Cops say they found the alarming items inside a dorm room Saturday.

"We found a Baretta shotgun. Students are not allowed to have any weapons on campus. It's a violation of the student code of conduct," said Jim Wiegand, BGSU Police Chief.

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for Brent Arnold, the university senior who lives there.

Police say he led them to the gun in his room where they found a list of five students indicating he would to harm them. Chief Wiegand tells NBC 24 Arnold was in a state of distress Saturday. A person who knows Arnold brought him to police Saturday out of concern. Afterward, investigators found the items in his dorm room.

A friend of Arnold's from ROTC was shocked.

"He's a nice kid. He's the ROTC historian. He takes photograph of all the events. He's going to be commissioned this spring to be a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army," said BGSU ROTC Cadet Brittany Kull. "It's surprising, very surprising. I could never believe anything like that could happen. He's a good kid."

The five students on the list were notified. But NBC24 found many in his dorm still unaware of the incident.

Police plan to arrest Arnold for aggravated menacing after he's released from a mental treatment center.

BGSU Student Hit List

Police say he had a gun, ammo and a list of those he would take out.

Bowling Green State University police say he had a gun and ammunition -- but that's not all. Police say the student also had a hit list of people he planned to take out.

This happened at the Harshman-Anderson residence hall on the BGSU campus, near the corner of mMercer and Wooster. One student who didn't want to be identified says he was number one on the hit list. He says his kill date was today and he says he's still scared.

Saturday, BG police say they found a shotgun, ammo, and a hit list in 22-year-old Brent Arnold's room. On that list were the names of five BGSU students who live in Harshman-Anderson dorm. One of those students claims Arnold even posted the names on his message board. After news of the list surfaced, the alleged victims showed their frustration by posting numbers on their doors-- identifying their place on the list.

BG police aren't taking the list lightly. They plan to charge Arnold with aggravated menacing. BG police say Arnold is suffering from depression. They say he's being watched at a local hospital.

I was wondering what was up yesterday. I saw a Channel 13 van parked in the Quarters parking lot across the street. My first guess was a robbery but this makes sense since Harsh-Anderson is right across the way.

still in shock...

I had gotten an e-mail (as I believe all students did) from Dr. Whipple mentioning vague details of what had happened...but it wasnt until I too noticed the news vehicles parked at Quarters when I really got interested enough to find out. so i went across the street (since I live in Anderson), bought some milk and asked the clerk what was going on....and I was shocked. I had no clue....and i live in the same damn building.

I agree with transfer, I hope this guy gets whatever help he needs to move past this!
