A View From The Dome

An athletic director at a major university has to wear many hats. His vision serves as a game plan for the entire department.

He has to find creative ways to put people in the seats. He has to develop a long-range strategy for buildings and practice facilities. And of course, in these tough economic times, he has to be an effective fund raiser. But perhaps his most important responsibility is to hire good coaches. Because without winning programs, the other things may not matter.

Bowling Green State University Athletic Director Paul Krebs' track record in hiring coaches has been nothing short of phenomenal.

While retaining respected coaches in volleyball, baseball, and men's basketball, he's added some impressive names to the BG athletic directory.

In Urban Meyer, he had the foresight to snag the hottest young football coach in America. When Meyer bolted after just two years, Krebs turned to his top assistant, Gregg Brandon, and the Falcons haven't missed a beat. The Falcons hockey program under Scott Paluch is certainly on the upswing, and now in women's basketball Curt Miller has proven to be another top-notch choice.

Paul Krebs and I have not seen eye-to-eye on some issues over the past several years. But when it comes to hiring coaches, Paul Krebs could not have done a better job.
