The Freak was sitting in the Arts and Sciences section at Doyt Perry Stadium for the 1990 Spring Commencement exercises....received the degree exactly 15 years ago...

It was windy, gray, cold, damp and Lynn Chaney, the current VP's wife, delivered the speech. I can't believe it has been 15 years.

I think I need to go back and get my Master's.

That's the way it should be...graduation at the Doyt. I love Anderson Arena but when I graduate Saturday I want to be at the Doyt. Nothing beats having a graduation outside.

Isn't there some kind of honorary "Master of Falcon Fandom" that you could be awarded?

I rather be in Anderson...it's the basketball fan in me. But I rather also be outside. So I have a plan, since I'll probably graduate around the time they take AA down, maybe I can have them leave it up for graduation but take the roof off so it has that outdoor feel!

Willie Mays spoke at commencement on May 1991. Sunny and in the '70s. A graduate who is now a local high school principal sat next to me and drooled through the ceremony because a girl about five chairs to my right opened her gown and began sunning herself in her bikini.

I was at Fort Gordon, Georgia in May 1987 when a guy woke me up in the barracks early in the morning and showed me the graduation pic that was on the wire and in the Sunday morning paper that had Mark Emblidge holding a poster of Mr. Rodgers in one hand and a bottle of champagne in another as he sang "Won't you be my neighbor?" Fred Rodgers and that conservative guy Buckley were the speakers that year.

I graduated in December '93 in Anderson... wouldn't have wanted it anywhere else!

My first graduation and my wife's graduation ceremonies (both spring) were in Anderson. Very nice. My second graduation was in the grass area in front of University Hall in the summer on a picture perfect day. It was an outstanding environment to have a graduation ceremony. Definitely to small of an area for a spring graduation and obviously way to cold for a winter graduation, and not to sound like baby bear, but the for summer graduation it was just right.

I graduated in August for my undergrad. Since I had already been working for six weeks, I skipped the ceremony because I was already long gone. When I got my MBA in May 1994, I decided to go through the ceremony. Scott Hamilton was the speaker, but don't remember a thing he said. I think the fact that is was about 35 degree with rain/freezing rain/sleet/snow had something to do with it. Not a good day to have the ceremony outside at the Doyt.

My vote is for the Doyt, but I'd sleep there if I could get away with it, so I'm probably biased.

Yeah, not enough room. And yeah, not so warm with ice on the floor.

Since I was unable to live out this dream, I instead wore a scale model of the rink on my mortar. Working goal lights and everything. It was, as my favorite goalie out here likes to say, SICK.

It was AWESOME, if I recall!!! Fantastic way to decorate the graduation lid!!! As someone who has been a platform participant in MANY graduations, and have just about seen it all....YOURS ranks as my #1!!!!

And to comment on the other postings about graduation at the Doyt....The first graduation I worked at was Olscamp's last one. The very next one was Dr. Ribeau's first one. It happened to be in the spring at the Doyt and it was FREEEEEEZING out, light sleet, with a strong, cold wind blowing in our faces....just a lovely day!!!

After that....we have had individual graduation ceremonies INSIDE!! The Summer graduation is still on the lawn in front of University Hall. Personally, I think it's kind of nice for the parents to actually hear their kid's name called when they graduate, which is something they DID NOT DO when they had them at the Doyt. It was a large impersonal ceremony, if you ask me. While it's a LOT of work to do 4 ceremonies in the spring, it's really much nicer for the families (who have shelled out B!G $$$) and the graduates.

Just my $.02 on the matter!!!

PS: At the 9:30 ceremony, Jordan and Bru are graduating tomorrow, along with AZZ's own Bleeding Orange!! Andrew Hart will be graduating at the 1:00 ceremony!! Hopefully, there will be a LOT of senior athletes graduating tomorrow or in the near future!!!!

SO, CONGRATS TO ALL THE GRADUATES!!!
