President Ribeau,
To paraphrase Dickens, “It is the happiest of times and it is the saddest of times”. I am referring to the retirement of Ernest Savage, Dean of the College of Technology. I wish I could be there today to celebrate the educator, the administrator, the man, and my friend. However, my busy practice is making a trip to BG difficult today. Therefore, I want to write this letter. Please share it this afternoon at the reception for Doc Savage, BG’s own Man of Bronze.
I first knew of Ernie Savage as a student, but never got to know him. Over time and since 1995, when we were both honored as Accomplished Graduates, I have considered him a great friend. I was delighted when the University selected Ernie to lead the College of Technology.
The College of Technology has certainly changed since I graduated in 1983. It continues to grow and gain in reputation. It takes many people, but there has to be someone with vision and enthusiasm to lead and inspire the team. Ernie Savage has certainly fulfilled this leadership role.
I can only hope we find someone to fill Ernie’s shoes and who can continue to lead the College of Technology into the future. Bowling Green, myself included, will sadly miss the leadership and the excitement that radiates from Ernie Savage. I cannot tell you the number of times I have introduced Ernie to potential students and friends and his excitement and kindness always leave a lasting impression. This is BG and this is Ernie Savage.
The happy part of today is knowing we have had the talents of Ernie Savage and as reward for his unwavering hard work, he will be able to focus his attention to the activities of his own choosing. I wish him the best and I hope to see him at the hockey games.
The most important thing I have learned from my days at Bowling Green and my long association and friendship with Dr. Savage is the importance of lifelong learning. I want to personally thank Ernie Savage for his dedication, hard work, leadership and friendship.
Ernie, you leave Bowing Green in a better state than you found it. I am not sure we can say that about the rest of us.
Sincerely,
Patrick Hansford, NCARB
